I have a 200. I don"t think it is charging. The guage stays on the D and when I turn the lights on it does bounce a little, but when reving the engine the lights don"t get brighter. How do I know if it is charging and how should I test it?

If you have a Dist/coil ignition and Not a magneto a quick check is to set at fast idle and remove the ground cable from the battery. If it's charging it will keep running, if not charging it will stop running. Another thing is to bypass the regulator by grounding the field terminal. If it charges the regulator is bad. If it doesn't the gen is bad.

Put a voltmeter on the battery posts; increase the engine speed and see if the voltage increases.
A fully charged 6 volt battery should read 6.3 volts and charge at 7 volts or so. A fully charged 12 volt battery should read 12.6 volts and charge around 14.0 or so.
