Super a - valve cover

Do I need to put a sealer on the surfaces when replacing the cork valve-cover gasket? Seems like I wouldn't if it is necessary to adjust valves after the engine is warm. Any thoughts out there? Also, is it ok to just clean the metal oil filter, (there is a WIX filter #51172) or should it be replaced?

Thanks to all

The original filters were washable. It is realy super rare to find one. There is a paper cartridge you can use Wix number 51172. DON'T THROW AWAY THE METAL FILTER Somebody is hunting for one. Or maybe, After I reread your post. Do you mean you have a metal cartridge Wix filter? Those are NOT washable.

Bill, After you get your valves adjusted hot, and are happy with the way the tractor is running, I would use a sealer on the cork gasket. You probably want to change your oil filter every time you change your oil. Cheap PM.

Another silly question, but don't you have to close up the valve cover tight run the engine to warm it, then adjust valves? If you need to keep opening is it possible to run the engine without a gasket at least for the adjustments??

Bill, Run the engine to warm it with the valve cover snugged with no gasket. Take the valve cover off and adjust your valves. Put valve cover back on and run it to see how it sounds, if all is well take the valve cover off, clean any excess oil and reinstall with the gasket and sealer.
