have a 53 SM. has seat bracket with shock attached. does not have spring like my M. it looks like it has an old aftermarket seat with a wire backrest about as big around as a pencil. what is the proper seat for this tractor ? our local IH dealer has a IH pan seat with a red/white pad for $89. would that be appropriate ? thanks.

I don't follow you as the OEM seat will not work without a spring. The OEM is called a "4 bolt", that is it attaches to the top of the spring mount with four bolts, two on each side. Lot of red and white seats around, but red and white was never used by IH. The OEM seat was covered with white canvas, I prefer white vinyl, it is not OEM either.

this seat mount is different from my M, as it does not have the large spring under the seat. it has a pipe mounted on the floor between your knees with a 6-8" spring apx.2-3" around sticking up which compresses when you sit. the pipe 90s up toward rear and attaches to a mechanism which allows you to tilt seat toward rear to stay out of weather. attached to this , is a square seat with a wire back rest. i guess my ? would be what was OEM on a super M ? i have seen this setup around but with different seats. ive seen letter series tractors with this seat mount. thanks again

Sounds like you have the standard IH seat frame
with a different seat on top.Mostly found on some H or M but could be used as listed in parts book for SM serial numbers F 501 to F 28174 or L 500001 to L 504801.The seat with spring under seat, which is on a lot of tractors, was listed as special.

Could be except for the shock, unless he is calling the small spring at the front a shock.

I failed to notice about shock in first post. But someone made a shock to mount on rear of the pipe seats. The lower bracket to mount shock bolted to
top bolt on PTO sheild and rear bolt on top cover, the top bracket went to pins in seat mount.
I still have one kept from a H we used on farm for years.I liked the way that seat set better
than the other type if the spring was adjusted right.Without a picture of the seat im just taking a guess.

I can't answer your question -- the seat apparantly is not IH. OEM on a Stage 1 Super M is the seat with the large spring under the seat, and a small shock in the middle. The stage 2 OEM was similar, except the battery box was underneath. The seat on earlier models, which I believe was discontinued before the SM came out, was a curved pipe with a small spring between your feet, had a tool box attached to the pipe, no shock absorber. Seems like someone else posted a while back about a seat similar to yours, I don't remember the details.
