This is hard to say, not being IH and all, but I'm taking on a Maytag Washer with Gas engine project for my wife. Anyone know of a good info source online(like this one) for these loud, obnoxious little heathen engines? I may have to go ride the F12 awhile after working on it to get rid of the cooties:>)

Hi Kevin,

When I was a wee lad of 6 or 7 years, I used to pull those things apart and put 'em back together just to get their two-stroke "operation" locked in my brain.

They are undoubtedly the simplest engine ever designed by mankind. You can make your gaskets out of plain old gasket material, run the oil/gas mix at about 14 to 1, clean the breathin' ports and ya can't keep the little stinkers from running. :>)

As I recall, their horsepower rating was about 1/8 horse or something like that? :>)

Thanks, I can't seem to figure how to bolt up the engine to the washer. The washer is a 1937, the engine is a model 72 so it should bolt up according to the limited info I found. But the bolt holes just won't line up. BTW, those spinners sure look good after the little workout you gave them!!

Most all of the Maytags had four "J-bolts" that clamped them around the cross-ties on the lower portion of the washer legs. Early uprights were about 1/2 hp, later singles were 7/8 hp and the two-cylinder jobs were 3/4 hp. As for them being loud and obnoxious, I made a muffler for mine using a piece of tubing, welded a flange on the end, capped the other end and drilled a spiral of holes in it like a silencer. Now just a soothing "putt-putt-putt" sound. Be especially sure that the check ball or check disc in the fuel pick up tube is free to rattle around or you'll never get it started. Close the needle valve all the way and THEN bolt the teardrop tab back on it with the tip pointing towards "closed". To run, open it up to where the teardrop is pointing straight up. For parts, try the link below. ANy other questions, feel free to email me! Good luck.

Kevin

I think ours was a Johnson motor. We had a flexible pipe to run the exhaust outside.Grandpa kept it running. Later installed an electric motor. Its a wonder somebody didnt get electrocuted. This was late 40"s early 50"s
