With the 'batter' under the seat you might want to make pancakes!

My 2 cents would be, if you go with the 12V conversion, do the three-wire setup. It's not that much more work, since you are redoing things anyway. Your charging at low RPMs will kick in faster.

The SMTA was originally 6 volt. It may be 6 or 12volt depending upon what has been done to it. If you go with the 12 volt you will need a 12 volt charging system, an alternator is easiest, and a resister ahead of the 6 volt coil or 12 volt coil with resister. If you need wiring for that check in archives for an excellent diagram by Bob M. I would reccommend the 12 volt but the purists will argue. Anyway you just gotta know what it was set up for before you got it.

If it"s wired for 6 volt wouldn"t you need 6 volt back in it if you don"t want to burn out 6 volt components? 8 or 12 volt batteries wouldn"t charge properly on a 6 volt system. I have a 6 volt system on my "61 140 and it works perfect! With lights and starting also! Why mess with something if it works fine? Scott

You do what you want but I'd put a 12 volt battery in it.

Me too Howard. That"s like running a tube type tire on a semi in this day and age of tubeless. They made 12 volt so it would have more power. I have both my 6-volt M"s changed over to 12-volt one wire alternaters and it is the cat"s meow. Harley

I just got an A running for a friend. The six volt battery (new) didn't seem to have the guppies to spin the engine at a sufficient speed, so on the recommendation of a coworker, I installed an 8 volt battery of same physical dimentions. Works like a charm. Apparently old car buffs like the 8 volt battery as well.

If a 6 volt battery doesn"t have enough "guppies" to spin an A, the problem isn"t with the battery.

The starter checks out and engine spins by crank well. But thanks for the helpful info. I'll be sure to pass it on to the others that recommended the 8 volt to me.
