Ran across IH 782 series2 cottonpicker. The guy said engine ran hot and now has a knock in it.Didn"t warp head. I run a 782 now and could use this one for spare parts. Was wondering about what that 358 might cost to fix and what tractors that engine might slip right into if I can run across something to mate it too.Always looking for a quick and cheap piece of iron. He only wants $600 for the picker so I think I got a winner on my hands.

The models El Toro gave you are European IH's, which you will not find in the U.S. The models Cliff gave you are correct, just add 3288 to that list. You've got to be careful about buying a engine from a non-tractor application and expecting it to bolt right into the tractor. Many guys have bought 310 German diesels out of 715 combines expecting them to bolt right into their 706, only to run into a flywheel issue. Someone else will be able to tell you more about that, but I think the problem is that the tractor flywheel does not bolt up to the combine crankshaft. If you want to do the engine right- total overhaul done by a professional, injection pump, injectors, water pump, oil pump, camshaft, dampener, machine shop costs- figure close to $10,000. If your're just going to fix what's broken yourself, $2000.

The 358 is used in these tractors too. 1046,1055
and 1056 and could be more. To completely rebuild that engine is somewhere in the $2500-3500 range. Hal

At that price I don't think you can go wrong with it but depending on what all it needs it won't be cheap to work on. It should fit in a 706, 756, 826, 786, 886 and I think the 3088. That should be a late enough engine to have the high compression pistons and the injector pump on it is better than the older ones as well.
