Farmall H won't stay running

Help - I recently acquired a 49 H from my brother. It has been sitting in a shed for 4+ years but prior to that used quite frequently for mowing.
Had a fella out to look it over and ended up replacing many parts, battery cables, new battery, carb kit, etc. Well it does start now but does not stay running.
It will sit and run without moving for several minutes but when you drive it, it stalls and dies. After sitting for about 30 min or so you can start it right up go another 100 yards or so and quit again.
One guy suggested taking the gas tank off and sealing it? Sorry for my ignorance but if anyone has any suggestions, I am so open to them.
The fella that worked on my tractor suggested taking the tank off and having it redone or adding a filter prior to the carb. But with the filter, we would still have issues. Not sure if we are on the right track or not, but like I said would love and entertain and suggestions.
Thanks in advance...
Patti (Iowa)

I think Loko's suggestion is a good idea. When you loosen or remove that tube nut at the carburetor you should have good flow of gas out of the gas line. No flow you have blockage, if flow is ok let the tractor run until it quits and pull off the coil wire at the cap and have someone hold it within a 1/4" of a good ground.
You try and start the engine with the ignition on
and see if you have a good hot spark from the coil wire. They may want to use a pair of insulated pliers, so they don't get bitten when doing this.

You need to do this before the engine parts cool.
If there's no fire your condenser or coil is the problem. Hal

The way you talked about the problem it could also be a bad coil after the coil gets hot they will need too cool down befor a machine will start again. If after you have checked your fuel supply you might want too check coil.

I had exactly the same thing on an H. It's junk in the tank. Take the sediment bowl off and blow out junk from tank. Install a filter in the top of the sediment bowl where it goes into tank. TSC carries them. That should do it.

A lot of good suggestions here. If you want to prove that the problem is in the gas tank before removing it, try hooking up a small gas tank, like a tank that is on a lawn mower, directly to the carb and try running it off of the temp tank. If it runs off of that tank, you know where the problem is for sure. It takes a little jury rigging but might save you some time in the long run.

Thanks so much everyone for all the ideas and suggestions. We will give these a try. I really appreciate it!!!! It has been frustrating up to this point since it seemed like I have just been pouring money in to it so far and no return.
Will update on what we find out. THANKS!! The suggestion on bypassing the tank was a good idea too. Hope it is something simple like loosening the gas cap as well.

See some really good suggestions here. I"ve had this problem with different old tractors and different things have worked in different situations. The simplest thing that you could check though is loosen the gas cap. In the past that little vent in the cap was plugged, would allow the tractor to start and run, then quit because no more fuel could come out.

Patti- I sealed the tank on my Farmall B with a kit sold by the Eastwood Company. Followed the instructions exactly and did not cut any corners. The liner is silver in color. Now after two years the liner is flaking off and little silver flakes appear in my sediment bowl and plug it up. I don't know about the other sealers on the market but I wouldn't recommend this one to anybody. Just my experience. Good luck.

Sounds like a fuel issue. I assume the filter installed in front of the carburator is an inline filter. Some inline fuel filters do not work well on gravity feed systems. Replace with a filter that does.

Before you tear everything apart. Check the fuel flow at the inline filter then again at the carburator. Remove the plug from the bottom of the carburator. Catch the fuel but observe the fuel flow for several minutes. At the end of 2-3 minutes you should have a quart or so of fuel in your container.

It may be that the inline fulter is clogged up already.

If the problem in crap in the fuel tank. Remove the tank, sediment bowl and clean the tank. Flush with water first, shake a chain all around the inside the tank, flush with water. Be sure you let the inside of the tank dry - outside in the sun for several days or vacuum cleaner on exhaust in tank filler opening for 4 or 5 hours.

Redcote is a product availabe at most autoparts stores. Redcote will seal the inside of the tank. Be sure to follow the directions and allow the tank (Redcote) to cure for several days after application. Do not rush the curing process. Any water or fuel before its cured and it won't work. You can tell by the lack of oder when the Redcote is cured.

Gene,
Thanks for the detailed information. Very helpful!
Fingers crossed that we will get this running (or keep it running) :)
Patti.

Patti:
I think it"s a good idea to seal the gas tank, your problem sounds like a clogged sediment bowl inlet or gas line. Take the gas tank apart & the gas line off, fix them and I think you"ll have solved your problem.
Good Luck!
Jeff

Jeff, Thanks much!!!
So dumb question (again) I was told to go to NAPA and buy a sealer kit, does this sound like the thing to do? Is there a special kind or more than one or?? Ok, guess I asked more than one question :)

there are several differnt sealers on the market. Not knowing what your store stocks I guess you just follow what you've been told. Sounds like there is probably rust and stuff floating around in your tank causing problems. the important part is going to be getting it CLEAN. You might even want to consider buying a better tank but all sellers are not honest and you might end up with one not any better. If dirt has gotten into your "rebuilt" carburetor, Yes, he might have to take it apart again.

your carb is probably all gummed up and needs rebuilt. old gas tuns to like varnish. and plugs up the jets in the carb starving the engine for fuel

Thanks so much for the info. The guy did rebuild the carb already. So, do I need to have him do it again or? Sorry for ignorance. If we take the tank off and clean it do you think that might be an answer? Starting to feel less hopeful about this whole thing....
Thanks!!

Picked up my M Sat. --its doing the same thing, run a little stop--it had been sitting along time & the gas smelled bad and the carb & gas line, the sediment bowl had this gummy goo. I bought several bottles of plain old rubbing alcohol cleaned every thing--today its running smooth as silk--AND it cost almost nothing.PS if you want to put off &maybe avoid the tank cleaning job ,pour some alchohol in the tank & let it sit over nite it washed mine out & theres a good fuel flow. Hubert - Will try that. Good suggestion.
Got my 'other' brother coming out Thursday to help me. This should be entertaining...
Anyway, since I do not have an inline fuel filter I am calling around to get it and put it on as well. Where I live there is no TSC and I have called Farm and Home and they don't have the parts. Called NAPA and O'Reilly's. No luck. Will try another town. I live in a rural community where 90% of the vehicles are trucks and the others tractors :) and there are no places to get anything. Oh well, that is another story :) I do appreciate all the input!!
Patti.
