I have an SA, Serial # 273056D. That would put it in 1949, but what does the "D" mean?

Thanks,

Bill in west-central AL

D represents a 5000 foot altitude attachment.

Where can you find a listing for the letter codes?

The Operator's Manual for your tractor should list them in the front.

The manual just mentions that the attachment consists of "a complete set of cylinder sleeves and pistons." Does this affect the way it's tuned? Should the tractor be tuned to run richer? I'm at about sea-level. Thanks a lot,
Bill

You probably don't need any adjustment. As elevation increases, power decreases. I assume the 5000 ft pistons result in more compression. Although not likely, if the tractor is fully loaded and you hear spark knock, the timing should be retarded slightly. The H my dad had (also sea level) would ping occasionally under full load, in a particularly tough spot in the field. Timing was probably off slightly. Nothing serious, just something to keep in mind. You don't do anything to the carburetor.

The tractor should be tuned so it runs properly, period. There's no one special thing to do just because it has high-altitude pistons in it.

I seem to have misplaced my operators manual. Haven't seen it for the LAST 50 YEARS!
