mitch: Read my responce to scotty. How did you get on with the hydraulic levers? That first day I never got home until well into evening. I did respond to the thread on Wed.

i didn't have time to take things apart yet, that'll be a rainy day project, so how often do i need to clean that thing on top of the valve cover? or do i even need to mess with it?

mitch: I'd clean that crankcase breather once per year, just do as scotty suggested. The J in your serial number stands for Rockford clutch. Most Farmalls after 1953-55 era have this clutch. My SA mid 53 production did not have J, but less than 5,000 units later, SA were factory equiped with J or Rockford clutch. My 130 and 140 both have J.

The history of this is, IH did not have a great reputation on clutches, particularly larger tractors with loaders. Thus came the Rockford clutch.

May I ask what the main uses you plan for this 140? Send me an e mail, just click on my name in the post, my e mail is exposed. I can really give you some suggestions on how to spend money on attachments for your 140. One other item, an expert I am not, maybe a guy with a lot of experience, particularly with these little offsets. Some of that experience was a bit expensive. I have owned 6 of the offsets in the past 45 years. Oh, I farmed with big tractors also, but most of those repairs were farmed out to IH and other repair shops. That doesn't gain you the same kind of experience as hands on repairs.

SO IS THAT IN ADDITION TO THE FILLER ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE MOTOR BESIDE THE DISTRIBUTOR? DO I NEED TO TAKE THAT ONE OUT OF THE VALVE COVER AND CLEAN IT OCCASIONALLY?

Mitch, I own a Super A, which it is a combo filler/ breather. I have never owned a 140, but I would think that you have something similar to mine. That being said, yes you can take that breather off and clean the wire mesh element inside in a bucket of kerosene or other cleaner.

scotty: On the Farmall 140 the device on top of valve cover is just a crankcase breather. The oil fill cap is on side to top of governor. Mitch, just in case he is confusing you the A, SA, 100 and 130 all had a hole through the hood, thus that crankcase breathr was piped to above hood and breather-fill cap was on top.

scotty: You see now, it's time you acquired Farmalls 100, 130 and 140 to go with your A and SA, then you would have the complete set. It may be a tad bit costly, but think of it this way, you would be familiar with all of them. You just dig out some of those mouldy green backs and spread a little wealth around.
