Looking to buy a used 300 utility that wont go into 5th gear. Are the forks bent on the shifter or what else could it be?

To answer the question by Nat it wont go into 5th gear, does not grind. I thought it might be the fork also but dont want to buy it unless I know for sure. Brian

How about we ask, what do you mean by "won't go into 5th gear?" Does it grind? Will the shift lever not go into that position? Does the lever go into that position, but nothing happens when you let out the clutch?

It may not be all doom and gloom. Possibly just a bent shifter fork. The only way to know is to take it apart.

Could be be a combination of a worn shift lever tip and shift lever pivot, aggravated by partially worn 5th speed clutches.

Try removing the shift lever (drive the cross pin out of the pivot), then use a prybar or a big honkin' screwdriver to slide the LEFT side shift rail inside the tranny as far forward as it will go. If road gear is now engaged it says the direct (5th gear) clutches are not yet completely trashed - the problem rather is a worn shift lever.

Somebody tried shifting on the fly one time too many.I bet 5th is totally gone now.Once gone,it wont come back. Its only a transport gear anyway, you might never miss it.
