IH U6 engine--good or bad?

I think I found an IH U6 engine in a 1971 model whitewesting irrigation pump. How can I find out? Did IH still use the U6 in the early 70"s? If it is, what is the relative HP to the M motor? Would the head be better?

The chassis serial prefix for the U6 is UBK, the engine serial prefix, under the #1 spark plug, is UBKM. I assume (my "assumptions" are usually wrong), that IH upgraded the engines when they changed tractor models, thus the last version of the engine would be 281 cu in, rather than 248 cu in. If it is other than 248 cu inch, the displacement should be cast into the rear right side of the block. And, that engine should have been discontinued in 1958, and replaced by the same 6 cylinder engine that is in the Farmall 560. What is in a 1971 non-IH product, I don't know -- someone else can clear this up, as this is pure speculation. The HP of a U6 could be slightly higher than an M, as I think they were rated at a higher rpm. I imagine the head and internal engine parts are the same.

Colekicker has had experience with them, I haven't, except for one my dad had in the 40's which I don't remember anything about, so listen to him.

Well, if you did find a U-6, it should be the same as an M, a 248. All the printed information I have found and the questions I have asked here say that. I have 3 and they are not all 248's. One is a 264. As for the cylinder head, it could be from an 248 or from a 264 or from a 281 depending on what may have been changed though the years. I one of my U-6's has a reman head, having the casting number ground off smooth and being stamped over. As far as I can tell, the powerplant engines are a kind of gray area that not too many people know to much information about. If you have any questions, let me know I may be of some help as I have some experience with them.
