The other day I was driving the 806 when the speed transmission shifter started acting up. It will slip out of gear when you hit a bump. It seems worst in third gear, but the others don"t seem right either. For some reason, it almost feels like the gears are sliding too easily, allowing them to just jump out of gear. Any ideas on what would cause this?

Yes theirs springs rollers that go into the detents under the plateform in the range shifter lid.

I would dare say 40 years of wear and tear are the cause of your troubles...

I would also imagine that there are balls and springs in the shift linkages inside the transmission that provide detents to keep the tranny in a particular gear. These have either worn out or the surrounding mechanism has worn out.

What seems odd though is that it just all of a sudden started. It never had a problem like this before. Also, I just went out and checked individual gears and for some reason, 3 and 4 seem the most affected. Gears 1 and 2 are only slightly loose. Is there some kind of a spring that keeps tension on the shift linkage or on the shifting forks themselves that could have broken?
