steering shaft pivot oil seal orientation

Finally able to get back to working on the old '51 M's steering shaft after a 3-week hiatus entertaining out of state guest and going one-on-one with my 2 1/2 yr old son. I have separated the upper and lower bolster and removed the steering shaft, gear and most all of the packing grease/oil and the pivot shaft oil seal. What is the orientation of the pivot shaft oil seal when installed? Does the 'cup' or open side face down or does it face up? If it faces up, does the upper bolster steering shaft bushing fit inside the pivot oil seal? Any suggestion for how best to install it? Any advice much appreciated.

Kevin, the open side faces up. I installed this same seal in the upper bolster of my H by setting it on a 3/4" drive, 1-1/2" socket on a 6" extension and gently raising it into place and giving it a few taps with a hammer. The trick is to keep it square with the bore in the casting. The extension can give you a good visual indication if you're properly aligned because it should be centered over the lower bore.

As to the bushing, it should be tapped in from the top until the edge is flush with the bolster casting. On the H, at least, there is a cavity below the bushing before you get to the seal. They won't be in contact with each other when you're done. I would recommend you put the bushing in first in case any burrs are made. Wipe the bottom of the bushing from the underneath (don't be tempted to use your finger for this, you could get a metal sliver in your skin) and then press in the seal.

Thanks for the info, it certainly seems to make sense having the open (cup) side facing upwards. Do you know if the lower bolster's bearing needs a certain orientation as well? That is, should the inner hub face up or down? Also, the felt washer and its retainer. Does that over the top of the bearing?

The newer thrust bearing for the H has a metal shield around the OD. I place it on the shaft so that the stationary part of the bearing is next to the stationary part of the bolster. Keep in mind that the bottom of the thrust bearing is the moving part. So - the part of the bearing that is attached to the shield goes up. That said, you are working on an M and you describe an inner hub. Since an inner race would turn with the shaft, it would be on the bottom.

The felt seal should go on the shaft after the thrust bearing then the tin retainer goes over the felt.
