A couple of weeks ago I wrote in with a starting problem and the Opinions were unanimous that I needed new battery cables. I got a pair of heavy duty cables from WWWCurtomBatteryCables.com (Thanks Hal ) Now after taking a closer look at the wiring on my 53 Super C tractor I want to replace that as well . Its all brittle cracked and in very poor shape.

I would like to completely re wire it. The price for a Restoration Quality Original cloth sewn harness that covers the entire tractor from YT is $178.21
That is way to much money for me so !! I would like to make a harness up from automotive wire Could someone tell me the correct size wire to use to do this or does anybody offer a harness cheaper then YT ? I don’t need restoration quality just plain old quality !.
Many Thanks ,
Joe

Hi Joe, Glad you're happy with the battery cables. Try this toll free number for a wiring harness. 1-800-839-1992. The company is Wertz Farm & Power Equipment in SE PA. They have a company where they can obtain wiring harnesses.

You could probably make your own harness. You need to identify every wire as you remove them and mark each end with tape. The part the wire was removed from and from which terminal. Be sure to remove battery ground first. Home Depot has a large assortment of wire and most automotive parts stores too. If you plan on doing it, you probably need to take a short piece of the old wire for sizing. I would mark each piece of wire as to where it was installed. A lot of it may be the same size. You can also buy a wire gauge that you just shove the stripped wire into an hole in the gauge. Hal

Thanks for all the tips Hal.
I'm going to give Wertz Farm & Power a call and see what the have and how much $
Most likely I'll wind up buying some spools of wire and doing it myself.
I do have another question !
All the wires on my old tractor look like the same color greecy red! . What colors should I use ? Just Red and Black ???
Joe

I would use red wires for the hot wires carrying
voltage and black for grounds. Be sure to mark
all wires. Very easy to forget where they were removed from. Good Luck, Hal
