I was mowing with my cub which has a Woods belly mower and heard a short sqealing noise from the back and the mower stopped working. The lever that engages the pto now will move back and forth easily and seems disconnected inside. Any ideas before I tear into it?

My guess is that your pto shaft locked up and the squeling you hear was your belt suddenly stopping. with the lever disengaged try and turn the pto. if it doesnt spin then you got internal problems. you can pull the shifter plate off and peak in side and see what you find or if it has a belt pully on it you might have some problems in the gear box. but i would say you got some work to do.
