Occasional filtering of H's hydraulic oil

Eventually I'll probably set up either a live hydraulic pump or the 'christmas tree' setup on the filler tube of my '47 H. If I do, I'll work a filter into the return line.

Until that happens, I'm wondering if I can do _some_ filtering of the lift-all's hydraulic oil. Is it possible to plumb, in sequence, a shut-off valve and a filter up to one of the belly-pump ports and have it's outlet hosed to a T on the filler pipe? The other working port(s) could have shut-off valves as well. To engage a filtering operation after the belly-pump's day was done, close the working ports and open the filtering port and cycle the oil through the filter? I'm imagining that would deliver so much oil to whatever is breathing at the filler pipe you'd be blowing oil out the breather. Any ideas on how to get around this? I see filter setups that can take twenty and thirty-five GPM so I would think this kind of thing is possible with the eight GPM (800 PSI) of the lift-all.

I know I might get the usual 'just change your oil more frequently'. I change it frequently enough - according to the work and moisture. I'm looking for a possible simple improvement here.

I set up my Super H to work with a log splitter. When I plumbed it up, I put a hydraulic filter in the line with the circulating oil on the low pressure side of the splitter valve. I had this happen twice in that the oil filter blew out the rubber seal after I ran it for a while. I don't know if there was that much debris in the oil or why it did it, but I always keep my hydraulic oil clean and change it occationally (only use the tractor for some mowing and snow plowing in the winter). I finally just took it out and it works fine without it. Roger

If you are using quick connect couplers on the hydraulic outlets, it would be easy to hook up a filter. Screw a 90 and a coupler on the fill pipe, and you should be good to go. Or you could just change the fluid more often ....

Filtering the oil would be okay, but simply changing it every few years would accomplish about the same thing. Most of the dirt that gets in there will settle to the very bottom of the reservoir and never cause much of a problem. The key to making those old pumps work well and last a loooong time is to not let dirt get it there in the first place! Always clean fittings before working on them. I have quick-couplers on the hoses of everything except my loader, which stays on the tractor. Before uncoupling a hose, I blast the outside of the coupling with a can of spray Gum-Out that I carry on the tractor. Before re-coupling, I use the spray and a clean paper towel on both halves of the coupling. The lift-all pump in my '49 M has seen a lot of work, and has been opened once since Dad bought it in '52.

Just to add my 2 cents in here, I would think that you should go ahead and re-plumb it for the two way hyds that you were talking about and put your filter in the return, just as you said. It would save all the bother of plumbing the filter up now. Besides, if there were any restriction in the filter system, I"d think you would split the filter open by running it on the pressure side. Probably wouldn"t happen, but who knows?

Seems like a waste of time and money to me. The belly pumps have large clearances and work on low pressure and low flow, just change it on time and you will be fine. "Works fine lasts long time"

Agreed, but . . . how many belly pumps have you lowered?

i have farmed with these tractors for thirty two years and have never had any trouble with the belly pumps. i have only taken them out to do other repairs. i have forty tractors and use around a dozen or so in regular use on our farms. if someone has more of these or more experience take their advice.

O.K. I've shut up. Senseless overengineering.

Filter would probably work, I don't consider it necessary, bigger problem is probably water, just change the oil once a year.

Part of the issue is 'why bother?'. Belly pumps are known to be pretty darn robust. I'm thinking, if it's simple and inexpensive to bring it closer to a better level of maintenance, why not?

Because 390000 were built without filters and the belly pump is a low maintenace item, as long as you keep the fluid changed. Trust me, you will never see the difference.
