I have a 1945 H the motor was rebuilt about two years ago. I was giving her a tune up and noticed oil on the number 1 and 4 spark plugs. The oil color is black. I use the tractor for hay rakeing, and pull it at the some of the county fairs around. What would push the oil out of the spark plugs, and why only the two?

My H started pumping oil around the spark plugs several years ago, I ran it 2-3 years after it started doing it. when it got so bad that I had to change plugs every time I used it, I rebuilt the engine..

Your tractor burns oil -- how much, only you can decide. I imagine if it leaks oil around the plugs, you are losing compression, also. Be sure the plugs are tight and the gaskets are ok. If they have been repeatedly removed, I suppose the gaskets could be crushed. You might want to check the threads on both the plugs and the plug holes. It may not be likely, but is possible that someone cross threaded them. I have a C with one plug hole that it looks like someone used a chisel in -- It needs a helicoil.

I have an M that use to do that when put under and long hard load. I don't think that it should be a great concern unless it keeps doing it and fouls your plugs. If it does, I would pull my pistons on 1-4 and see that the rings look like. As for one and four and no others, who knows. Perhaps the compression is greater on the two, or the vaccum is different. I could never quite figure that one either. I replaced my rings and it cleared up.

You sure it isn't a leaking valve cover??

Idea the sparkplug is cold (compared to the combustion chamber) as a result the gasses leaking out condense on the plug, forming the deposit. Two possible answers.
#1 The threads leak (as mentioned)
#2 The shell of the plug leaks

I have seen both!! the sparkplugs (I hope non-Champion) need to be torqued into the "Cleaned" holes (a round wire brush used to clean tail light sockets work well professionals do it) and they need to be installed with Permatex corp Molybdnum disulfide anti-sieze compound (silver gloppy stuff). Coat the threads of the plug with at least a farmer match head size dollop. Then tighten them in.

If the metal part of the plug looks fairly clean, but the insulator (white part) is oily, the plug is leaking and needs to be replaced. I've seen tractors (and cars/trucks) that do not burn oil mess up a bad set of plugs, or plugs not lubed or torqued correctly.

Good luck, and let us know of your results.
