Hello, Just replaced the points yesterday and couldn't get it to run I checked the gap at .020 and it seemed ok but the motor wouldn't run. I cleaned up the old points and put them back in and then i could get it to run. It still isn't quite right but runs pretty good. The problem all started the day before when i was combining. When it opened up on the govenor like when you rev it up or it starts pulling hard it would start missing on 1-2 cylinders. Any help apprecaited. Thanks

Some point sets are lightly coated with oily rustproof coat, need to spray cleaner on point. I have used plain coleman camp stove fuel on brown paper bag to clean Bosch sets- work good. CRC electroclean on Lucas point set and wipe with card stock also worked. Old points sets can get a bit of oil film from engine- file/clean works then also, you seem to have gotten old set to work doing that.

Are you sure you have the correct points for that
engine? If they are, you may need to run a point file through them. Have you installed new plugs lately? They may be breaking down under load if they haven't been changed lately. New plugs wires may in order too.

When you install those new points again, remove the coil wire from the distr. cap and with the ignition switch on, hold the coil wire within 1/4" of a ground on the engine and with the points closed snap them open a couple of times
and see if you're getting a good spark from that coil wire. If you are, the engine should run.

You may need to open the main jet adjusting screw CCW on the carburetor to see if the it's set too lean. Look that distr. cap over very carefully
for any cracks. Hal
