Always impressive to see that shuttle launch. Boy, that thing would make a heck of a pulling tractor!

The first few shuttles launched had the fuel tank painted white (for example, the first launch of Columbia). After that, NASA dropped the paint to save weight and money.

I agree. If you get the chance watch one of the old Apollo mission launches and notice how long it took to get that monster moving compared to the jack-rabbit take of the shuttle. I was in Florida last summer and visited the cape and took a tour complete with models etc. It impressed my son enough that he is going into computer engineering.

I'm a bit disappointed that they are still having issues with pieces falling off on launch. Maybe they need to consider painting the tank with a paint that would reduce friction and/or incorporate a bonding agent to help hold that insulation on. Maybe they already dismissed this as a dumb idea…

Ya and it would make me feel so good that Nasa said they thought it would be all right to fly that thing home. Not me Jack. The only thing wrong with that thing is that I don't think they could get enough people on in to drag me up there. Always comforting to know that 2 million parts were made, ordered engineered and assembled by the lowest bidder. Makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy don't it? Harley
