We have just purchased two Farmall Tractors. One we have as yet to identify but the info we have for the second is as follows: B Model, the serial # FAB 85577. What do we have?

Gene and Francis, congratulations, I say shoot first and ask questions later...I've bought stuff that appealed to me even though I didn't know the exact make or model..bought my B250 knowing that I was going to look at an old tractor that had been sitting in a shed for a long while, old guy thought it was a diesel...I would have bought it sight unseen because I knew the family , still wasn't sure after buying it because you couldn't read the decals..knew when I got it home and cleaned off the serial plate...I'll be glad to help if I can, so will lots of guys on here..best wishes, sounds like you can wrench and paint..you're on your way!..... Wasn't granny it was grandpa, just wanted them off his land. Kind of caused a problem: we really wanted a good deal but really didn't want to cheat the feller. What a predicament? Only way we can possibly feel good is to do a good job of restoring and then later on possibly sharing them with our local historical association. That is how good the price was.

Gene abd Frances,
'Ya did just fine in the aquisition and I'm sure you'll do fine in the restoration too. There is a lot of info out there re: Farmalls and you can find a lot of info right here on this web site. No matter how long we have been doing it, there was a time when all of us who are now into old tractors didn't know anything about about them either. We learned by watching, reading and asking questions just like you're doing. Good luck!
Lou

I'm sure it's just me, but why would you buy something if you don't know what you're getting?

Looks like it was just you.

It is a lady who'll say "We don't know what we bought!". It's like "We're lost".

You would not have responded the same way to "Would like to know more about what I have".

But they are exactly the same statements.

I guess if you don't buy when you don't know what you are getting you never buy a novel or go to a movie unless you've already read it or seen it. Probably don't subscribe to the paper or magazines either :-)

When I bought my O-6 and my SMTA-D I didn't really know what I was getting but was not disappointed.

My wife was given a "Farmall Tractor, not running" a few years back. We drove Tulsa to near Houston and were surprised with a very clean straight 300 with stuck engine and good tires. Guess I should not have gone.

ya, I can relate to that. Sometimes at auctions I buy things I have no idea what are. Like my friend Larry likes to say, "when the ducks got his tail in the air..... "

barkley, it's not like they didn't know what they were getting, they just didn't know the exact model, year, and a few other specifics that are very necessary for the proper operation and care of a farm tractor. At least they came to the right place to ask the questions.

THE PRICE WAS RIGHT! NEXT TO FREE, IN FACT, THEY WERE FREE TO START WITH and BOTH HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO BE RUNNING IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT PAST. CAN YOU THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO GET INVOLVED WHEN YOU YOU WERE RAISED ON THE LAND, HAVE RETIRED TO A FARM. WORKED AS A MECHANIC WITH PAINT AND BODY EXPERIENCE AND HAVE A BRAND NEW SHOP IN WHICH TO WORK WITH ACCESS TO SOME MONIES? COME ON NOW, GET SERIOUS, IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN THAT BIG OF A MISTAKE? WE REALLY DO NEED SOME HONEST HELP IN GETTING INTO THIS, DON'T WANT TO BOTCH THE RESTORATION AND IT IS NOT OUR CAPABILITIES THAT WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT. TRUCKS IN THE PAST NOW TRACTORS.

Gene and Frances in TX

PS: We intend to use the tractors on our farm.

A bit harsh, though I have to admit I sometimes wonder the same thing.
If you look at on the left column of this page under Research & Info, you'll find serial number pages that can identify your tractor's year of manufacture. Looks like yours was built in '42.
A search through the archives always provides a great deal of information as well.

Read my most recent reply! Again the price was right. Besides as fairly recent retirees we need a new hobby don't have enough. Cost of traveling is almost prohibitive. Can't afford to travel to the Casinos!

Yeah, don't take it personally. I've seen a few dozen "what did I buy?" posts around here lately and it gets me to wonder. You chose a great hobby. Cheap - compared to most anything else, relaxing and rewarding.
There's lots of great people on this site that'll help along the way too. Good luck.

Thanks Dave. You are the support we were hoping to find. Of course, a little sarcasm sometimes lights fires. It certainly doesn't dim our enthusiasm!

I had pretty well determined it as a 1942 Farmall but was hoping to surprise my other half with a lot of info when he comes in from the peanut plant where he works to support our "bad" habits. Spent most of day yesterday perusing this site. Already know much more than we did two weeks ago when we were offered the tractors. In fact, they were given to us originally but we didn't feel right in just taking them so we offered to pay for them. Even then the price he would take was next to free!

We have been tractor lovers for several years. Visiting shows, tractor pulls (that is my love), etc. Until we retired we have not had the time or a reason to consider restoring another truck or tractor. If we hadn't needed a tractor for our gardens we would not have stumbled into this seemingly windfall. Though we are excited about the restoration our main goal is for it to plow our gardens.

In the area we have settled in tractors are, even the little riding lawn mowers, right next to heaven. Don't know whether we will get that far as we really saw a potential for a workable machine.

Thanks again for your support. Nice to know there are people who care!

Can you put a photo on this site? Post it to the "Help Identify" section under "Galleries" and you will have many replies helping you ID the second tractor.
Congratulations on your purchases; I was given a Super C many years ago on the condition it was used at our local threshing show. Not a problem!! Since then my sons & I have acquired several more and now my grandson has his first tractor.
The ability to preserve some of the past and being able to share with the younger generation is so important. We can all be "teachers" in our little part of the world.
Please ask for any assistance you need from myself or any members of this web site.

I replied to you a bit earlier but want to add a second comment, I am also a genealogist. To me our "histories" are so very important. As a nation we are becoming so very far removed from our founding. In fact, my children will be the last generation to be able to recall anyone born before 1900. Their children will know very few if any people born before 1909, the year of my father's birth. My father spent much of his youth in Akron, OH. His father, my grandfather, was the business manager for Firestone. My daddy when he shook hands with you for the first time would always say "I want you to know that you have just shook the hand of a man who has shook the hands of Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and Henry Ford." My father would be "96" if he were alive. Neither my children or grandchildren will ever have experiences like him. History is quickly moving on and so much history was made during the 1900's. Memories are kept alive by those who take the time to restore and preserve the past. Thank God for people who love tractors. They are an intricate part of our American History.

You can bet that you will hear from us again. I have been a computer geek for many years. Until now my husband hasn't really paid much attention to the "web" but with our discovery of this wonderful support group Gene is even beginning to take and interest in this form of communication.

Thanks again to the friendly people on this site. We will be back in touch.

Gene and Francis, welcome to our world, come on in and join the fun. Wouldn't hurt if you both had a pair of tall boots handy, it does get a bit deep from time to time, and every once in awhile the criticism can be quite strong but for the most part it's all in fun. We do our best to answer the questions that get asked, and quite often we all have questions of our own. As some others have stated, this is just about the best little coffee house in town.

Just don't you folks pay too much attention to anybody that comes from west of the Missouri River out in Nebraska land. Those folks only get to town about twice a year, to vote, and to pay tazes, and they lead a pretty sheltered life. You'll figure out who we're talking about soon enough. Hehehehe, Harley
