I recently saw a w-400 gas that was painted yellow. What is most likely the story behind this. The tractor does not have PTO or belt pulley. Is this tractor any more unique than a red w-400? Was this most likely a dealer color or a road assocation thing. I have searched through the archives and pretty much got the feeling that IH would paint a tractor any color your heart desired as long as you ordered a couple of them. Any idea of the value of a good running and looking w-400 gas? Thanks Jake

Both the PTO and Belt pulley are options. They don"t have to be there. You are correct on the color issue. Check the serial number plate to be certain it is a W400.

Most likely was owned by a county or state roads maintenance dept. Or a construction company. The tractor may or may not have been painted yellow at the factory, most likely was repainted yellow to match the rest of the equipment. These tractors were used mostly just for drawbar work, the PTO and belt pulley were not needed so the tractor was ordered without those components. It would not be any more valuable than any other W-400. Price would be determined by the actual condition of the tractor and also by what part of the country you are in. A W series is somewhat rare in row crop country, but very common in wheat growing country.
