Am looking to buy a new truck for the farm and recreation. Been putting off for 5 years now. Either want a dodge or chevy 2500 with a crew cab. Well got a close look at the new Dodge "PowerWagon 2500" Holy crap , I like it. Hemi powered, 33" tires( I like the clearance), 12000Lb mounted winch with from cab locking diffs front and rear. With dealer buy back Looks like could be had for $32,000. Any one own a newer 2500 Doge that could give me some Honest pros/Cons. Please dont turn this post into a brand pissing match. Need serious advice as the wife said "get it" and it will be used for the farm and pulling the boat and who knows what else.

IMHO, Ford has the best built pickup, Dodge has the best looking pickup, and Chev/GMC has the best driving pickup. Personally, for your application, I would buy a Ford with the IH diesel engine. All are good trucks so buy what YOU want.

Well put. I agree, and most car and truck mags agree with your order in overall ratings --- Ford, Dodge, Chevy.

BUT, I think the differences are so small that it isn't worth arguing about and I would be happy to own any one of them. Mostly boils down to brand loyalty, which believe it or not, has existed since they started making things with 4 wheels.

Sorry to hijack, but what kind of mileage are you guys getting just driving the diesels?

I need a full-size to pull my trailer, but 95% of my driving is just the truck, empty, commuting back and forth to my day job. Even at $3 a gallon it doesn't make financial sense to have two vehicles, but I still want better mileage.

I've heard people claiming 20MPG or better with their jacked-up 4x4 dually diesels. My theory is that I could get better mileage with a 2-wheel-drive 3/4 ton diesel than I do with my 1/2 ton gasser. I'm getting 18-20 MPG in the summer, and 16-17 in the winter.

Plus there's that whole bio-diesel thing...

We get about 20 to 22 unload and probably around 15 when loaded... It might do a little better as the motor gets broken in more to... With my 94, the best I ever got was 16 on the highway, but usually around 12, and sometimes during the winter around 8.... So the diesel pays off there for mileage...

My 1994 Ford (Powerstroke with 5-speed manual OD) Heavy ¾ Ton 4X4 extended cab long box will get anywhere from 10 (pulling hard) to 19 (no trailer or load and driving very nice at about 58 MPH) with summer fuel. Under normal empty road speeds (65-75 MPH) I get about 16 but I have the low 4:10 gears.

I had a 94 Dodge Ram 1500. We bought it when it had 27,000 miles on it and I just sold about a month or so ago and it had somewhere around 128,000. We only did general odds and ends on it.. It was and still is a good truck. I pulled a camper, 20' flatbed with a tractor on it. But the tractor only weighted around 4,000 lbs or so. We now have a 2005 Dodge 2500 4x4 with the six speed and its a diesel. We pull a 22' 5th wheel trailer and you dont' even know its back there. I really like the new Dodge trucks and what they have to offer. We put both tractors on that trailer and pulls it good. I hate pulling heavy loads with a automatic and with a diesel but that alison transmission is hard to beat....

I read most of this with interest as I own one of the first Ford 7.3 Powerstrokes made in 1994. Have had a couple issues, but the engine remains solid and the mileage respectable. Overall I have been happy with it. I have a 5-speed manual with 4:10 gears behind the powerstroke.

A couple things I think are important when choosing a pickup/motor combination. First is basic engine design.

The Dodge hemi is simply an engine with a combustion chamber with a hemispherical dome on top of the piston rather than some other shape. The hemi is nothing real fancy, old technology that has been around, tested, and proven to enhance performance and fuel efficiency.

Inline six cylinder engines typically have a longer stroke than a V formation. This generally means more torque (longer lever on the crankshaft) and much better lugging power especially at lower speeds. If you are going to be pulling hills at lower speeds an inline six will handle it better than the same size V formation. However, if you are going to get on the Interstate and try to cruise at 75 or better the V will have more high-end horsepower. Simple physics here, can’t change those laws.

Diesels usually are more fuel efficient than gassers, but right now diesel costs more than gasoline. Right now Dodge has the Cummins and that engine has a long, proven track record for durability and reliability. Ford has had the powerstroke for just over ten years, and Chevy, well...can’t seem to make up their mind.

Personally, I chose to go with the V-8 formation because I wanted a “snappier” engine off the line and more power at higher speeds. Another reason I chose a Ford at the time was because Dodge and Ford were the only ones to offer a full floating rear axle (like the big rigs have) in their ¾ Ton pickups and I liked the Ford’s ride and extended cab better than the Dodge. I have not researched the Duramax engine much, but I HATE, repeat HATE automatic transmissions for pulling and won’t even consider one for my own use.

I suggest that you sit down and figure out what you want to do with the vehicle, and then go buy the one that will get you the closes to your needs. My nickels worth.

You were saying something about hating automatics for pulling and I had to throw in my $0.02. Properly set up with coolers, etc, an automatic is not a bad choice for pulling. After all, fire trucks, garbage trucks and Greyhound buses have used them for years in the roughest usage imaginable. Not to mention the earth movers, etc that use the first cousin to an automatic-the torque converter and power shift. In the 25 years we have had automatic transmissions in fire trucks in my department, we have NEVER had tranny problems. The auto's are easier on the drive line, and have no clutch to burn up. Of course, they get a little less mileage and are not as good on holding back on hills.

I have driven automatics in big school busses, cars, and pulling with pickups. I agree that properly set up they are reliable and easier on the drive train than some drivers would be with manuals. I don’t have a bone to pick with them mechanically, but I do in drivability.

I find that so many times they are not in the gear that I want or need for what the traffic or road conditions warrant at the time. So many times I’m idling along in town or something and the auto has just up-shifted so the engine is idling, but it can’t see the slight incline coming and the need for more power. Or, I’m pulling a hill and almost to the top when it un-necessarily down-shifts. I also dislike them on slippery roads because I never know for sure when they are going to shift and potentially cause a skid.

Call me a control freak, but when I have a good old manual I know when the shift will happen with no surprises. As far as burning clutches out, I realize that when you have others driving that may not know how to use a clutch this can be an issue, but personally I have never burned out a clutch in a vehicle. It’s called using the proper gear (granny) for starting out heavy loads and keeping your foot off the pedal when you aren’t shifting gears. Double clutching to better synchronize the gears helps too…

I have had a 1997 1500 Dodge and 1998 2500 both with 360 had decent power and good reliability. I now have a 2001 3500 with 6 speed and cummins high output diesel. Lots of power and the only time the noise bothers me is at the Drive up of McDonalds. The newer ones are extremley quiet. Like one of the other posters stated I would wait until fall when Dodge brings out the bigger crew cab.
My Brother also has an 01 that he had customized to a crew cab and has the banks system and Jake brake and 6 speed,What a puller. My dad has a 1998 with cummins and automatic with 250,000 miles and only problem has been the air conditioner.

I just test drove a 05 Dodge Cummins 2500 4x4, and the previous diesel noise in the Dodge is gone. This is a quiet diesel. The ride is good, noise inside is low, has 600 ftlbs of torque (biggest available - I was told), so decided to buy it.

With current pricing, the $45.6K unit went for less than $38K.

I have talked to many haulers, and they nearly universally say to get a diesel and stay away from gas, because torque is what you want. And, nothing smaller than a 2500/250. I personally wanted the Hemi because I am old and Hemi means something to me, but decided to get smart. The Hemi is a car engine, really.

Dave, Wait! at least till Fall....Dodge is bringing out their NEW Crewcab. This will be one ausome rig.
There are are so many Dodges here in Central Texas one would think they grew on trees. 95% of all HD Dodges are Cummins powered and 4x4! At least around here.
I would not buy the gasser for a pickup power plant under any circumstances Most guys I am around get right at 16/17 mpg. Most are running 75 down thr road, and pulling larger loads thqwt the average joe. Good luck on the truck hunt.
Later,
John A.

Thanks for the post's. The back seat is awfully crowded. I do really like the chevy 2500 crewHD. I wonder how the duramax is compared to the cummins, pulled 6 horses from Minnesota to Gunnison Mountains in Colorado a few years ago with one of the guys 2500 Dodge cummins and the deisel just loved pulling that load up them mountain roads. Just did not like the cab noise from the engine.

Hi Dave,

Don't compare any diesel engine to the 95 engines as they all are 1/2 as noisy now than the 95 models.

I have a 02 PSD and don't notice any noise other than at idle standing next to the engine. The 05's are quiter than my 02.

My son bought a 04.5 Dodge, CC, CTD, 6spd, SRW, swb, 4wd. Had Dodge built the same truck in 02 I would be driving a Dodge.

The Dodge 6spd shifts twice as smooth as my Ford 6spd. My Ford CC has about 6" more room than the Dodge CC. A Huge difference.

I get 19.2mpg empty on my 02 F350 DRW, 6spd, 4wd with 3:73 and 14.1mpg pulling 16kGCW thru the Colo Rockies. My 15k mile liftime average 17.1mpg. The diesel option takes about 100k miles to break even on cost vs fuel savings. I don't trade until 300k so I'll save a ton of money.

Both have or did have manual 4wd. That's very useful for backing heavy loads in lo-2wd.

Dave I have had 2 other dodges and liked them. Have a 02 now never buy another. Like the looks but can"t hear the radio and it would ride just as good on steer wheels and rubber mounts with out springs as it does with tires and springs. It is a baaad one on the hiway.

Sure like my 2004 F250 Powerstroke. I'm getting 16 mpg pulling a 10000 trailer. Lots of torque at the lower rpm's also.

I don't know. I bought an 04 Dodge Hemi to replace my aging 99 Ford SuperDuty 5.4 Both are equiped the same, Standard cab 5 speed 4x4 with 4.10 gears. Hemi finaly got broke in so it would pull at 18,000 miles but I still have to keep PRMs above 2500 to get any power out of it. That means no overdrive unless I'm running around 65 or better and it does suck the gas. Just got back from Red Power and didn't figure the milage but it's somewhere around 9. Not too bad considering I was around 17,000 and had quite a bit of hilly conditions and olny about half interstate.
But now the sad part. The Dodge don't have near the low end lugging torque, less ground clearance, and when it got muddy this spring I put the Ford back in service and never looked back. The Dodge ain't scarcly been unhooked from the trailer since. I guess it's my highway vehicle and kind'o expensive for a trailer queen. At some point I'm going to have to trade again and I'm thinking stongly of a real truck.

I like GM, but I am not brand biased. It all depends on what you want the truck for, load carrying capacity, towing capacity, or just the way it looks. Go to the manufacturers web site and look at the specs. All 3 manufacturers have mostly equivalent models, I don't think the hemi is a racing engine, particularly, since it is probably detuned somewhat for truck use. It is a selling point for Chrysler, who are trying to bring back the glory days of NASCAR in the 60's and 70's when the 426 hemi gave the other manufacturers fits. If you want economy, and can stand the extra $5000 or so, buy a diesel. I couldn't pass up GM's employee pricing, I bought a new GMC Z71 for $8000 off list, 5.3 liter, 4.10 rear end, obviously lousy gas mileage wasn't a factor in the decision. Trucks are a matter of opinion, shop around and do your homework first.

If you really like the Dodge, you might want to consider one with a Cummins. Mine get's 20 mpg if I drive it easy and has tons of torque for pulling. I think the engine will easily outlast the truck. Mine has 120,000 miles and still runs like new, although it does leak a little oil.

Well, my honest opinion is you are going to love the power of the HEMI but are going to hate the mileage of it. Although a wise man once told me about his motorhome one time when he was filling it up. He said " If you are worried about how much money it costs to fill the fuel tank you cannot afford to own it."
I personally do not like the interior of Dodge. GM and ford have much nicer interiors. With GM leading the way. The crew cab Dodge is not really four real doors. Do not believe me park one beside a GM or ford.
My instinct tells me to suggest you buy a diesel if you are going to be working the truck, but the cost is quite a bit higher I would assume. Now if you are just wanting a play toy, by all means go out buy that hemi and let er rip.
BTW, I only own fords. Two with powerstrokes and one with a 460. The strokers have a combined mileage of close to 1 million miles. 1 has 740,000 the other one has 254,000. The gasser is for the sunday cruise.

The hemi does have its power. But it was made for racing not farm work. Personnal I would go with the new ford diesel crew cab. A lot of people around here are on 160 - 180 miles and not missing a beat. Do the maintainance and very little down time. I like the remote starter in the winter time. Push a button and the computer does the rest..

my 2 cents

I was a Ford man until I drove a Dura-Max married to the Allison transmission. The big plus beyond that, which is enough in my book, is the comfort. I feel like I'm driving a big heavy car in the Chevy. The new Ford (Powerstroke) is nice but they did not lose that "your in a big truck" feeling. If the Dodge package could lose the noise I would like it some, my Dad swears by Dodge. I pull 18,000 regularly with the Chevy and have made loaded trips of plus 2,400 miles and sometimes I still find myself smileing at the performance.

They build those Allison transmissions about 20 miles from me for those trucks in White Marsh, MD.
It's an enormous building and they're talking about building an addition. The miltary vehicles
use a lot of Allison transmissions and I never could understand why they used a GE transmission in the Bradley Vehicle. A lot of failures during testing and they still bought them. Hal

I looked at all makes and models before I decided on 2004 2500 HD Duramax GMC. I liked the front end styling a little better on the GMC. I absolutely love the truck and pull a 25000GVW tandem dually trailer loaded with 16000 lbs of tractor and weights and yes I pull over the mountains of Wa. and Or. Grossing nearly 27000 lbs total and consistently checking fuel at 12 to 13 loaded and 17 to 18 empty. The ride is very good and the Extended cab gives me the room I need without getting so stretched out with the crew cab. I do have the long box 8' so I'm right at 51 feet total. I do think the cummins motor is a great engine but was not convinced that Dodge had the transmission to hold up under heavy pulling. Automatic that is. Just my opinion.Migraine

the 4 speed is lacking. I don"t understand why they don"t use it like a gear vendors unit because the OD gears are in the tailhousing and it could be easily turned into a 6 speed simply by reprogramming the computer.
