Hey Oldtime:
I have a B250 and I just adjusted the brakes. Yes they do have adjusting bolts but you already know that if you have had the assembly apart. I find it odd that you must machine a part to make the new discs work.
I agree however that the glaze might be a problem. Is the problem just performance, or will the new assembly not install due to lack of clearance?

oldtime: Welcome, to North America. Now my thinking, you are using terminology not many folks here are going to understand. Could you elaborate a bit on what you mean by, " stack height of brakes". I'm sure most of us have some thoughts on what you mean, just not brave enough to take the plunge.

You are not going to find a lot of guys in the US that know the B-250 very well, as they never got many of those tractors new. Here in Canada however, there are lots of B-250. I've never owned one thus have never seen the manual either. It may be that term brake stack height is used in manual.

I didn't tell you much, but at least the guys will see activity and I always say activity brings forth more activity.

the height of the brake assy ie plates and acuator assy when you have them sitting on a bench or in the relaxed position in relation to the height of the cover assy . thay are two discs and a cast iron expanding assembly with 3 balls inside the cast iron plates and the clearence is set at the factory ie the clearence between the stationary cover and the moving brake discs when everything gets worn fitting new brake discs is not eneough to make it work properly and you machine the stationary cover to get the brakes to work properly ie dont grab and work well . belive this type was fitted to other IH tractors thanks oldtime (no tecnical writer )

oldtime: That is what I figured you were talking about. You've completely rebuilt those brakes using new discs and they don't grab well. Do the pedals have adjustment bolts. Most of the old American built Farmalls had this, however I've seen a few British tractors without the adjustment. The 656 Farmall for example used shims under brake cover when tractor was new and you removed these as needed. This worked much the same as machining you describe.

Another thing we often had to do with new brake discs was rough them a bit with a sander or rasp. Some of them had such a hard glaze on them from factory you couldn't get them to grab. These brakes don't have a reputation of being best in the world by a long shot.
