Seeing what's wrong with an H

I made contact with an old friend a few weeks ago - hadn't seen her since high school. She and her husband live on his family's old farm near Thomson, Ga. In the process of re-aquainting it came up that they have an old Farmall that they "need" to get going again. When we drove the two hours to visit last week I got to take a peek at it, under a tarp in a shed. It's been parked a while, but the tires were still up. Soon as I saw the seat and a corner of the rear end I knew it was an H. Anyway, we were wearing visiting clothes and we didn't want to disturb the wren nesting under the seat so I've got to go back soon to look closer. Brings up a few things- First, I've got to see is the engine stuck. If it's not, I would go through the fluids, make sure there's oil, etc. Then I'd want to check for spark. It's still six volt, I know, and magneto, I think. If the battery is as dead as I expect, can we just unhook it and put a 12v to the starter to turn it over? And worse, if it has more problems than can be fixed in a day does anybody know of someone in the Thomson/Augusta area who loves working on old Farmalls?
Thanks, Wm

I would remove the spark plugs, squirt some oil into the cylinders and then crank the engine over by hand several revolutions before attempting to actually start it. It is OK to put 12 volts to the starter, but do not run the starter much more than about 10 seconds at a time, let the starter cool down, and then try it again. You would also be money and time ahead to remove and rebuild the carburetor before you do anything else, and while you're at it, take a good look with a flashlight into the gas tank, you might want to remove and clean the tank also.

When I bought my W-9 it was outside in a field. We turned it over a few times(the oil idea sounds pretty good) and then we put gas in her hooked it to the pickup and about thrity feet later I drove it on the trailer after twelve years of sitting. Of course the old gentleman I bought it from drained the carb when he parked it but it sounds like to me like a pretty good find. You never know she might bust right off. Good Luck!
