Hey all,
Been shopping for a tractor near 100 hp to farm my 32 acres a little faster than I have with a little 32 horse unit. Have run across a fairly nice 966 with a cab; 2400 hours for $7500. I seen guys practically faint at the thought of owning one of these Hydro units and other guys swear by them. Do I read correctly that thre wer non-hydroversion available too? Anyway, I have zero experience with these units. I need a realiable tractor that will get about 50-80 hours a year and not eat me up in repairs. I plan to pull a 7 shank disc chisel (in clay) and other appropriately sized implements. Any sort of advice welcome. Many thanks.

Jim Allen

Thanks for the advice. A 100 horse tractor around here in decent shape is less than 8K. That's a lot less than the normal price for a fairly new diesel tractor like my little Ford around here. I have just been comparing brands. FYI, I want a bigger tractor to reduce my time in the field. As much as I enjoy it, the farming is my hobby, not my primary job. This clay soil is playing HELL with my little Ford, too. It's all it can do to pull a two bottom plow through it. It took more than 50 hours to till and plant a 20 acre section into wheat. Don't mind the work but can't afford the time. Most guys pull a seven shank disc chesel around here with about 100hp.

Jim: At 32 acres and 32 hp your already overpowered. Unless you have good deep pockets keep the tractor you have. These big bruts can gobble up $10,000. in repairs, faster than you can blink your eyes.

Hi Jim,

That's an awfully lot of tractor for 32 acres, but if you think you need that kind of power, I sure wouldn't be afraid of it 'cause you are never going to hurt it.

Just make darned sure the hydro is okay before you buy it because they are REALLY expensive to repair; the fix will probably cost more than the tractor is worth.

Allan

A hydro and a chisel plow is not a good combo for for anything more than brief use. I had a 1066 Hydro and it was the finest pto tractor I've ever used for mowing, baling, and silage cutting. Ten years of bottom plowing and 4000 lb. offset harrowing required a hydro rebuild.About $6000.

Gear drive 966"s are much more common than the Hydro. Hydro"s are exellent for loader and PTO work, but just can"t put the power to the ground efficiently when it comes to tillage work. I don"t think a 966 Hydro is the tractor for a seven shank disk chisel in clay. Been looking for one the same size, worried that our 966 gear drive will have all it wants. $7500 is about right for a nice one, but I doubt 2400 hours is correct for a 30 year old tractor.

"but I doubt 2400 hours is correct for a 30 year old tractor."

That only works out to 80 HOURS A YEAR. Unless its extremely cherry its much more likely to have 12,400 hours then 2400 hours.
