this is our first year baling hay. we bought a IH 37 baler off an ol'timer up our way and it has been giving us trouble. We have the manual and have been trying to adjust it because the one knotter isn't always tying...it's been tying as little as every other one...very frustrating. Any suggestions from well weathered IH 37 users?
I resorted to sitting on the baler and tying the knots as the bale runs through the shoot. I know it could do better because the left side knotter works every single time! Thanks for your help!

I had a 46 twine baler for a while. I allways had problems with one side also. I think the left side worked on mine too, right side missed every other bale. Being 20 and little patience, I gave up on the IH baler and bought a JD 14T, been workin" good since. Good luck. Rich

I have the 27 baler, which is smaller than the 37, but with the same knotters. The most critical is that the twine knives are sharp or the knot will untie. The right side give the most problems and I don't know why. They don't like to be pushed and you need windrows without clumps of hay. I bale with a Farmall M without live power and when the windrows are good you can bale a lot of hay. Also if you try and make the bales too heavy the twine holder can't hold the end of the twine and you don't get a knot.

If you don't have a manual get one and time the knotter like the book says and it will work.

They have to be really clean, no rust, all the little bits of twine cleaned out - Even if you hace to remove it to clean it all out. Did this years ago on a 46 and it went a long time with no misses afterwards. Most will work better with the heavier twine, not the 9000' rolls.

We had a 45andI sppose the knotters are about the same. WEverything had to be right or it would not tie, but if it was right it did a good job. Make sure the bill-hook is smooth and clean, and the twine knife is sharp and positioned correctly. Another thing we found out is that the rolls the 45 had for the twine to go through and hold some tension on the twine had to drag a little. Don't know if the 37 has them or what it has.

Ran a 37 baler for about 20 years everyone told us they were never any good but we had very little trouble with it. one year just all of a sudden it started missing on one side cant remember which side. no one could figure out what the problem was. took us two days to figure out that the billhook had a crack where the pin pivots to open and close and it would put just enough of a bind that it would not work freely. the crack was extremley hard to see.
