1086 transmission woes

A friend has a 1086 diesel that is making rock crushing noise in the range transmission. He took out the power steering pump and the idler gear was OK but the driving countershaft gear is busted up. It is my guess that there may be bearing problems as well.

My friend has asked me to fix the thing and I was wondering if anyone has any insights as to what kind of a mess I'm getting into.

Thanks

OH BOY ARE YOU IN FOR SOME FUN AND SKINDED KNUCKELS . If it is the range trans then the cab must go or be held up on stands the PTO must come out both axel housing must come off get the rear housing out from under the cab then the ring and pinion must come out all the gears . About 30 hours of work . It realy help to have the rear splitting stand for this job that goes under the rear housing.

Thanks for the heads up.

It's the front box that has the broken gear so I was hoping I didn't have to dismantle the whole back of the tractor.

Thanks

Well then that is the speed trans and it is not that bad of a job but ya still have to support the ft. of the cab and do a double split ya don't have to remove the T/A but don't screw up on the spacers or just how the gears go in and if ya get used gears make sure that the # match . When installing the lower counter shaft tighten up the nut tight then back off and then snug up and drill and pin the nut to the shaft with a 1/8th x1/2 roll pin.

Thanks for the tips. I might just pull the thing and take it into a shop for the rebuild. Then if it goes south shortly after installation they can put up with the war.

This one doesn't have a cab but does have fenders. Do I have to pull the floor pan and all that or can I just block between the floor and the rear box?

Thanks again!
