When I started it this spring, gas was pushed into the crankcase and filled it up.(how would that happen?)

I had the carburetor cleaned, and replaced the oil, and oil in the air filter.( It was full of water and all kinds of crud)

It will start and run a short time, only if I pull the choke out.

Have you opened the main jet adjusting screw near the bottom of carburetor? Turn the screw 1 full
turn CCW to see if the engine will run without choking it. Make sure you're getting a good flow to the carburetor, loosen the tube nut at the carb
to see if a good gas flow is there. If flow is
just a trickle, you have blockage between the tank and carb. Could be dirt or rust or both. Hal Note: Always shut off the gas at the tank when not in use.

Well that means you have one of 2 problems. You aren't getting gas to the carb or the carb still has a problem. Gas in the oil means the float needle seat was not working like it should have the the gas ended up in the oil because the float needle wasn't shut offf the gas it it filled the carb and then went in to the oil. If it only runs choked it means its not getting enough gas. The main jet may still be clogged or the tank or line is clogged
