The other day I was exercising my 350 diesel and it was a hot day and it was running good and strong. When I would drive downhill and the engine was brakeing, there were flaming hot sparks coming out the exhaust; why did this happen on deceleration and not when under load?

A diesel being run down a hill (within normal RPM range) is pumping a bunch of air through the cylinders. When it has been worked hard, it is as hot as it can ever get, and the carbon in the ports and chambers and exhaust manafold will be near incandescent. As the fresh air hits these deposits, they ignite and burn out (it is kinda like a chimney fire in house, but not nearly as serious). I believe it'll be fine. This is especially common when the engine has been used lightly for a spell, or has not gotten up to full run temps and stayed there for an hour or two. It should mellow out after a few hard hours of work.
My two cents, Jim Nicholson

Perfectly logical reply! Thanks a bunch. I wish I had figured that one out because it makes perfect sense. I don't work it at all so it is probably very sooty inside. I need to get something besides a post digger in order to make her work a little harder and clean 'er out.
