When mowing some knarly hay with milkweed the sickle bar kept bunching up. Rather than get off and free it up by hand I would back up , go forward, and repeat til clean. I was mowing with the trottle way up so when I would shift from forward to reverse I'd get a grind from the transmission. To lessen the grind I'd cut back on the trottle. Well, one time when I shifted I got a major grinding from the area below the shifter. The PTO was engaged. I quickly threw in the clutch, but the grinding would reoccur if I let out the clutch. I put the clutch back in and shifted to "neutral" To my surprise when I let out the clutch the tractor started moving in neutral. I limped on back to the garage and parked it. I have never worked on the transmission gears or a PTO. Where do I begin to find out what is wrong? Sounds like I sheared something off. I have a IH manual for A,B,BN etc. What do I do first ? drain the transmission box? I would appreciate any advise as to what I will find if I take off the 6/8 bolts around the shifter to get to the transmission gears, Or do I just deal with the PTO first. I need your help. Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help. I did pull the cover (and yes it was tough getting it off past the light switch). Sadly I broke off the middle shifting fork. It wouldn't be bad if that was all BUT the shifting fork destroyed the large gear closest to the PTO at the bottom of the transmission box. Question now is how to fix. Am I going to have to break the tractor in half by removing the 4 bolts at the corners of the transmission? What function does that big gear perform? Is that the oil slinger or for one of the speeds? Any suggestions as to where I can get these parts and costs? I have some local places I can try for used parts. I plan on reading up on the transmission in my IH service manual but will listen to any advice from those that have been down this road before. Any tricks that I should know. Again thanks in advance.

As CNKS says, try removing the transmission cover first and have a look inside. Kinda tricky getting the cover off past the switch box but it can be done. You may want to jack up a rear wheel and push in the clutch so you can spin the transmission and get a good look at all the gears. Let us know. Dave.

You may not have broken anything. Just remove the transmission cover and realign the gears. If that works, go easy on the shifting. You will see if you have damaged any gears. Try the transmission before you look at the pto. You don't need to drain any oil just to remove the top cover.
