Farmall H Hand Crank

I have a 49 Farmall H. The shaft that extends out the front has a hole real close to the end of the shaft and then I see where it looks like there may have also been a hole a bit further back that was later filled-in.

When I place the crank on the shaft it looks like if the original hole were still there it would matched the notch in the crank perfectly.

Do you know of any reason they would have filled the old hole and made a new one near the end?? It seems a bit odd. Also since the pin is missing what type of pin was used?

Is that assembly difficult to remove if I decide to drill a new hole?

The former pin was likely broken off so try punching it out. Grind or file the surface to locate the original hole. Have someone hold a large sledge hammer underneath while you use a punch from the top. If you have an acetylene torch, you could heat the end of the shaft & try punching the old pin out.
If memory serves, the pin is 1/4" in diameter so you can use an old bolt to replace the broken one. Find one with a long enough center section without threads and cut it off at the correct length allowing for the crank notch. Smooth the ends so your clothing will not get torn when you brush up against it in the future. Since the bolt will be a loose fit, rough the part that will be inside the shaft with a center punch so it will stay in place when driven in place.
