I was wondering if anyone could identify this sickle mower for me. It mounts directly to the axle of an H or M Thanks in advance. If I can't get the picture to come up then it is in the help identify section under Jon Holt.

Here is a number 12 mower that can be mounted onto the H and M's

I believe that the #12 is a little different. It looks like there is one gear box that drives the pitman and no belt.

Thanks for all of the info. I still have a few kinks to work out on the mower but it seems to be quite a nice mower. At least it is better than what I used before. (a MM UM4 mower) I am going to see if I can get some cutter bars for it and a new belt and she should be in prime condition for haying.

Hi Jon, yes there was a version for the C & SC that connected to the rear axles. Not sure of the model number but it was C-?? and 6ft cut.
In late 50's replaced it with the 7ft 3pt hitch version model C-28, I think. It is still in the corner of my brother's shed.
Hugh is correct they were the best sickle mowers until the NH haybines.

Jon: From your description, probably a H-M16. This mower was also made in an A-16 version. It was also they only mower of that era to bolt directly to axle housings. The A version bolted to final drives of A. All other mowers of that era bolted to the drawbar. Not sure but I think there were B and C versions as well. The only differences in any of these model 16 mowers was mounting designation and hardware.

I"m not much help in remembering the model number, but I remember using one on my father"s C. It bolted directly to the axle housing and was lifted by a long rod that ran to the lift arms by the fuel tank. When we mowed hay I would use the C and he would use a 4020 with a new pull-type New Holland sickle bar. Even though the C mower took much longer to mount and did not have live PTO, it was faster and easier to mow with.

Paul: No question, if there was one thing IH had right it was quality of work by sickle mowers. They out did everyone until haybines came along. My dad had one of the IH semi-mounts, 7' behind Farmall 130. That outfit mowed some the heaviest tangled alfalfa. Got fed up with IH 45 baler and traded for a NH S-69, loved that so much he thought he would try one of their mowers, same semi-mount configuration, 7' and behind Farmall 300. That little 130 with the IH mower and no live pto would mow circles around 300 with IPTO and NH mower. Had the NH mower one year when NH came out with 460, 9' haybine. The NH mower was history.
