Only been to two Red Power Round Ups (Bloomsburg & Tenn). Bloomsburg seemed to have about twice the tractors. Maybe just a lot more tractors in PA. I wonder how Iowa compared? Tenn show had no 88's, no 86's, one 84, one 85, no 64's, 4 or 5 04-06 series, two 68's (one real nice 1468); no 74's. I should have known to stay home when the RPRU website was just a picture of the ad in Red Power; I called the no. for info, got a recording that said call would be returned-it wasn't. No real address ever listed. No one in Lebonan knew anything about the show. No signs. Found the sight by accident!

I normally dont post in response to these mud slinging post but after having driven 1300 miles round trip to this years RPRU I have a few things to say about it. First, after being out there all three days my wife and I still loved it! I thought it was a great show. I hated to leave. This was my first RPRU and it wont be my last. I have never been to the show grounds before and I drove right to it. Plain and simple directions given in all ads about the show. Or if you dont want to follow directions all you had to do was follow the IH signs everywhere. Yes I like the newer tractors also but as someone else posted most of em are still in fields working. I saw quite few of them while on I40 from Oklahoma to Tennesse. We could rave on and on about what wasnt there but thats one of the beauty aspects of the IH product line; it covers soo much. Oh well my 2 cents. Hats off to the folks who hosted RPRU 2005!

Maybe if Wolfman comes to next red power. They will take up a collection and send him a map. Very good show and a plus to the people who put it on.

wolfman: You've taken a fair bit of heat over this. Maybe your a bit like me, I don't know, but I can't get excited about antique tractor shows anymore. there is only so many configurations of a Farmall tractor out there. Having farmed with 16 new or near new Farmalls in my lifetime, I've seen most of it. By the way of the 16, at least one came from each series from letter through to 66 series, smallest being a Super A and largest being 1066. Having said all of this, I see no good reason why a 63 year old man should stand around in the blazing sun just to see a few old tractors. I used to go for the social aspect, however I find if you get more than 75 miles from home you never run into folks you know anymore.

Then you get folks chirping up that directions were great, and I admit they usually are provided you come from the right direction. Problem as I see it, show organizers forget there are usually many directions from which to approach a town. They do tend to over look many of these.

Then there is the factor that many of these folks had to have a good time, only way they could justify spending that much money. While some of these guys have been quick to critize you, they forget everyone has to look at tractor show from his own perspective. I tend to search out the guy who has a tractor I want to see, then pay him a visit. You very rarely run across someone who isn't proud to show you his tractor one on one. He knows you came to see his tractor. I ask you, how many of the RPRU exhibitors are going home disappointed as they aren't sure anyone was interested in their tractor? Take Farmall H's for example, bet there was a hundred of them. How many people could look at them all and still remain interested. If they drove an H as many hours as I have about the 3rd one would finish me.

You have a good day, threat this like water off a ducks back. Every man has his own interests. You have a right to yours.

Until I left home most of my tractor time was on an H -- I still like to look at them, because they all tend to be a little different, whether because of options, or because someone has modified one. I also like to look at the quality of workmanship on restored ones (without criticizing) and compare it with what I can do, better or worse. However, I doubt if I could last 3 days at a tractor show, I'm 4 years older than you are, but haven't quite used my bones as much as you have. I'm still going to RPRU someday, if it ever gets closer than 1000 miles from me. I tend to doze off after the 1st 200 miles or so. In fact I nearly fell off the H many times.

Thanks Hugh & others for the kind words. Yes I know it is a lot of effort to put on a show. My committee at our local county fair works hard for our 40-45 classic tractor display & ya can't please em all! But without a crank the pistons would stop.

Wolfman,
I want both of us to be happy. I enjoyed it, wish you had stayed home too. I have never been to Lebanon, and I am from the state of Mississippi, where everyone knows we are as dumb as dirt. I was able to find the place in less than 10 minutes.

If you looked at web site do not understand how you could have had trouble finding site. In big letters it said exit 239 I40 3/4 mile West on US 70 showground on right.

wolfman: I notice a couple of your respondants are quite gungho on google maps and mapquest. I can tell you these do have flaws. Maybe not many but the flaws are there particularly in rural areas and areas now urban and once rural not many years ago.

I agree that they didn' do the best job of running the show, but that was probely the first time they tried a deal that big. I had never been there before in my life, and I found it in 15 mins from the interstate. I loved the show in spite of the heat,a bad back,& 2 bad knees. I gues I could have taken my 8 tractors over there and I did have a 06 & a86 in the bunch, but I was lazy like someothers. well anyway have a good day

I did attend my first RPRU this year in Lebanon, Tn. and did ENJOY it. I had never been to the facility that it was held at. However, I do know about Mapquest and can read directions. I congratulate ALL of the people who did put forth the effort and the expense of coming from all over the U.S.A. to provide us with an Excellent show!!!! For all of the participants I have only one word for you.... THANKS!!!!!

I agree with CNKS, it takes a lot to transport the larger tractors. As for as myself, I enjoyed seeing all the different Hi-crop models as well as the other tractors .I enjoyed getting to meet the Cowman and seeing his 560. I'm sorry that I did'nt get to meet you and see your tractor-Which was?

They had a real good show, over 1500 entries, I have been to 5 redpower shows and most of the tractors at all of them have been the pre 1970's.

I have never been to one because they have been too far away. I might suggest that for those wanting information, to subscribe to Red Power Magazine, it has contact info in it. The show has been advertised for a year. I think this one was sponsored by chapters in 5 states. The ad in Red Power has 15 phone numbers listed. Exit 239 off I40, then 3/4 mile on Hwy 70. As to the larger tractors, it takes a semi and a lot of money to haul one of those, that leaves out the run of the mill "restorers" such as myself.

Crying because certain tractors weren't represented to your satisfaction??? Come on!

I can see having a beef because there were no signs directing you to the site, but are you REALLY surprised that nobody in the area knew about the event? The internet gives you a false sense that this sport is popular. In reality, there aren't that many "tractor people" out there. Most people couldn't give a crap, and if they knew about it, would probably complain about the noise.

Nat: I agree with you, just what percentage of the population are antique tractor fans. I suspect very small numbers of the total population.

As for the post 1965 and larger tractors not being there, number of reasons, cost of moving large tractors, most tractors with factory 3 point still have work clothes on. Also costs a lot of money to restore and rebuild a big diesel.

As for finding an event or a place. I've travelled North America a fair bit. Problem with signage, it's usually done by locals. This does a good job of telling locals how to get there. I've found most shows, road depts, etc. do this very poorly. They need people doing this, with enough smarts to realize the interested locals already know the directions. These folks must look at this from the perspective of a stranger. As a general rule very poorly done most places, including my home town.
