I was thinking of looking at some 263 combine engines. I understand that these are the same motors that are in a 560 and a 706. They are sleeveless though. Can get one pretty cheap like $550 or so. If thats cheap might not be for all I know. Salvage yard says that they dont know the condition of these before they get them but that these motors dont have the wear as a tractor motor.
Ok? I dont know that.

He said that if I get a bad one they will replace the motor. Not my labor, fluids ect. I would have to bring it back.
OK? Normal? Is there a way to check the compresion of a motor out side the machine? I was thinking about a stater motor attached while on a hoist to check it out. I dont know just thinking about it.

Kelly, You don't need an engine for that "new" tractor already ,do you? I'm not too impressed with the gas 6.Burn lots of fuel and don't think the thermal efficiency is good. They give off lots of heat. Have a hydro70 gas that works good but I only run it about 20min a day on the feeder wagon.

I checked the compresion and the #3 cylinder needs rings. Runs fine but you know me. Thats already starting to eat at me.
I am not going to be able to stand it till I fix it.
I found a Sleeve kit for $460 and gaskets about another $100. May just do that.

I got a price from Gotvalds fot a complete frame out. Head, Sleeves and bearings for around $1800. May do that. Actually if he is not pulling my leg on that price. That seems like a real good deal.
Asked Mike at Dordals what they run there. He said about $6000 for a complete. Again Dordals trys real hard for me not to spend any money there.

Then I am still thinking about the combine engine. $500 would be a easy fix for now.

Kelly: Don't get hung up on these combine engines. I know what your thinking (706) right or wrong? I'd look for a D-360 or DT-360 out of a truck. Probably one of the best diesels IH ever turned out. I've never heard of a 766 or early 886 that turned out to be a lemon. IH have been putting that engine in S-line trucks since the mid 70s. Got to be a million of them kicking around North America. The S line was not built to outlast those engines.

Go and buy a running truck with the 360, switch engines and resell the truck.

you nailed it hugh! i love my 706 but i'm obsessed with my 766. now i just gotta find a 756. overhauling my 766 as we speak. if everything goes right it'll be running this afternoon. taking a lunch break at the moment. this old 360 has 9000+ hours on it. the head had work done sometime ago but the motor was never touched. once i get her running good she's getting a turbo. i really want to put it on now but i'm gonna wait till i'm done haying in a few weeks. just can't hardly stand looking at the turbo, might have to hide it till i'm ready.....

Yep,

That would just about make a 766 out of that 706.

Noisey buggers, but oh what an engine!

I don't know why that wouldn't work. A battery,
cables and a switch to crank it or use a screwdriver across the solenoid. I think a switch would be better. A file too, if the paint and rust is heavy to get a good ground. Hal
