I recently bought a 1954 SMTA. Serial number 68990. The engine number stamped on head, right, back side, shows 122454. Casting code 4-23-Z Is this the correct engine? How do the engine numbers relate to tractor number? I know the "Z" indicates 54. I would sell, or trade this WFE (Schwartz)tractor for an unrestored, nice running Super H.

It should have C-264 cast into the right side of the block. Guy Fay's book indicates that that the engine serial prefix is also C264---the engine serial should be stamped on a machined surface on the block under the #1 spark plug or thereabouts. Engine numbers are not related to the chassis serial.

The serial number 122454 is STAMPED on the machined surface below number 4 plug. There is another machined surface below #1 and I can make out 64 at the very right. Are you saying the 122454 should also have "C264 in front of it? The "4-23-Z" is cast into the cyl head, right side.

CORRECTION --I don't have an SMTA, I was going by what Guy Fay's Data Book says -- I looked at my Super H, and the engine serial is stamped on a machined surface at the rear of the engine, as you have, no prefix on the surface. It does have C-164 cast in the block to the rear of the machined surface. Apparantly Guy calls that the prefix. It would be redundant to stamp it again with the serial. The C164 on my SH is mostly hidden by a hydraulic line, so you might look closer. My SH does not have the second machined surface under the #1 plug, like the non-super series do. I imagine you have the original engine, however I did not know the number would be triple digits. IH didn't build that many SM's and 6 series--but perhaps it's true if they included all SM, SMTA, and the 6 series including crawlers and industrial engines, etc.

Added wrong, SM and SMTA production was around 130000.
