Unknown year IH McCormick No. 52 Tractor Trailer with a Noble Manufacturing Company (Sac City IA) "Bolster Hoist". Distributed by Lindsay Bros. Inc Farm Equipment Milwaukee, WI.

Hey all,

I thought I would share what I got at an auction last Saturday in Macomb, IL. We drove all the way over there, about 200 miles, to bid on an IH 3082 3pt backhoe, which though I desperately wanted it, I couldn't get myselft to nod again after $2700. It sold for $2900.

Shortly before the backhoe, they sold everything on one of the rack wagons and then said that they were selling the wagon as well. I have been looking for a rack wagon to use as a mobile supplies and tool platform while working on my house and buildings. They started bidding, and it went all the way up to $300 and I hadn't even bid yet. My wife was yanking on my pant leg telling me "Bid.. bid.. I have a feeling", so I put up my hand for a $310 bid. It sat at $310 for a while and then, what do you know, I got it with a single bid.

Luckily, I still have my buddy's oversized trailer from picking up the 656, so we were able to load it up and bring it home. After about 2.5 hours of washing and cleaning, it ended up being a real nice wagon. Wood is great, and the running gear is in perfect shape.

I am guessing that this was assembled by the company on the sticker "Lidsay Bros. Inc. Farm Equipment Milwaukee, WI". My thought was that the farmer ordered the running gear and then the dealer put on the hoist and rack.. is that the way it would usually have been done? Judging from the paint condition, it looks like the hoist was original to the rack and gear.

Does anyone know how old a McCormick No 52 Tractor Trailer would probably be, and what the weight capacity would be on this thing?

Just thought I would share the latest find.. it seems that IH stuff is being attracted to my barn lately!

Darren

Yeah.. our corn is looking better around here. We got about 1.5 inches of rain in the last week. Go 90 miles from here and they got none! Pretty dry.

Darren I have 2 of them wagons and they are nice. They both have sides and the year on mine are 58. I guess I never payed any attention on how its attached. On the back is a gate that flips up in the middle to dump your grain, or you can take the back off completely.

Illinois Boy... where in IL are you?

I was wondering what the hoist would have been used for.. someone told me probably hay, or cob corn.. but there does not appear to be any way they had sides on the trailer.. any ideas?

That wagon almost surely had sides at one time. They were very common around here. They were pulled behind cornpickers to recieve the ear corn. The hoist was used to slowly dump the ear corn into the elevator drag to fill corn cribs. I'd say that it is mid 50's to early 60's vintage. Probably a 4 ton gear, judging by the wheels. I still have the sides and end gates for two of these wagons in a shed. The wagons are long gone. After ear corn days were over, a lot of people took the sides off and pulled these behind small square balers to stack hay on for the trip to the barn. The floor may have been replaced at one time. That's why you don't see the holes to attach the sides to it.

Doug,

There are actually a few holes, but they are small round holes located in small rectangle notches in teh bed. The wierd thing is that the notches don't go through like a stake pocket.. just through the edge board and then flush with the bed of the trailer. This pic shows better.

Do the round holes go thru? If they do, that's the original set up. The sides have "irons" attached to them. They are basically a flat piece of steel that have a round, threaded end on them. The threaded end goes thru the round holes in the floor and have a flat washer and nut on the bottom. The irons hold the side boards "down" into the notches. The sides on these wagons were usually only a foot and a half or so tall.

Doug,

That sounds like the setup I have. I guess it's only a rack wagon, but it's good to know it's original. You said you had some sides for these but no wagon.. do you have any interest in selling a set if they would fit?

Thanks,

Darren

Yes, I guess I'd sell a set of them. I would have to have the measurements from your wagon. Length and width inside the "rails". There is a nice red set, I'd say $50, and a not quite as nice white set for $35.

Darren In Pesotum,
I'm in S. Illinois - down by the Ohio River.
Man - I don't have a clue about the trailer.
Maybe hauling dirt or gravel - silage? The dump feature leads me to believe it was something loose, but could've been hay bales too. With no way to attach sides, it makes ya' go Hmmmmm m....
Whatever the reason, the tilt feature is really nice. You could fabricate side on it pretty easily.
