I recently tackled the task of rebuilding the rear lift cylinder on my Farmall 460. The new kit is somewhat different than the old piston seals that are currently installed. The new kit has 4 fiber rings similar to an automotive piston ring. They are split like a piston ring. There are 2 of each color and thicknes. I assume 1 of each thickness goes above and below the piston O-ring that came with the kit. There are no instructions with the kit. Does anyone have instructions on putting this kit in? How are these rings arranged on the piston? Is there a special tool to compress the O-ring between these rings to get the piston into the cylinder? I have an automotive ring compressor but it doesn"t put enough pressure on the O-ring to get it to seat between these rings. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi slb,

I like using ATF on the seals before I put on the ring compressor as that lets the new seal slide on the compressor face as it tightens, then also helps when you slide the piston into the bore. I also prelube the bore.

I hate new seal designs as I figure if the old seals lasted 50yrs, why change the design.
