It's been about 4 years since I've logged on but it seems to me that bermuda Ken helped Big John and many others.. I needs parts to fix a Hydraulic leak on a 1948 "C" Farmall. I suppose it leaked into the oil pan as I seem to remember other had this problem too. I just put in a picture AD to sell a couple hours befor this leak so post your dealer Phone # and I'll call asap. I didn't see a link to a private message? Thanks agpilot

The oil leak is most likely caused by a bad pump seal(very common). I can be reached at 1-866-FARMALL (327-6255).

Hi bermuda Ken: In my hurry to do too much today I forgot to ask where I can check the hyd fluid level? On the control box under the gas tank? Which side as viewed by the driver? What fluid is it? engine oil or Dextron maybe? Sorry I didn"t get these questions in the first post. I also just remembered that wasn"t Big John. It was "Big Red" who was so active here at YDTractors.. Anyway I better do all checking first. I was parked on a slope so better drive to level ground too. Anyone else can answer these "checkout" questions too. At least this problem got me back fooling around with Farmalls in the summer.. I"d just used it for pushing snow 4 several years. Thanks.. agpilot

You check the fluid on the left hand side as you are sitting on the seat. The fill plug is angled into the side of the reservoir. Loosen the plug some and relieve any pressure that may have built up inside the reservoir. Don't ask me how I know that there can be pressure in there. Use any good quality hydraulic oil. The whole system takes about 3 quarts. Fill it to about 1/2" below the threads of the fill plug. It needs some room to expand as it heats up during use. I found this out by blowing out one of the plugs in the side of the housing.

Hi Randy in NE. I like your answer.. and no I won't ask you how you found out there is pressure inside.. (grin.. I've done that sort of thing too) Yep.. it was real low. I'll find something like IH HiTran to add and try again. Maybe I'll luck out by just filling it.. but like Ken said it's common to loose a seal.. That means I'll have to ask where is that seal? Between the pump and the engine block that it's mounted to up front? Anybody comment on if it's a Tricky or fairly straight foward repair job? Thanks. agpilot

Seal is on the pump shaft, obvious when you remove the pump. The shaft may be grooved, requiring a "speedy sleeve" (about $25). The seal can be either rubber/metal or a simple o-ring. If an o-ring, the hole in the housing that the shaft goes through will have to be enlarged to accept the sleeve.
