I just got my 40-44 H running.. my grandfather gave me this tractor which hasn"t run in 20 years. the motor was stuck, I freed it up, did the head, valves and a new manifold. I removed the carb off it and cleaned the bowl as well made sure the main jet was free of debris.. I got the tractor running tonight and it ran beautiful for 15 mins, after it was got nicely warmed up the motor started missing and hunting up and down and occasional pop through the carb. It quit finally and gas was running out of the carb, I shut it off at the bowl and it quit running out of the carb. as soon as I crack the tap gas will run out of the carb, I belive this was flooding the engine making it to hunt up and down. Is the float in the bowl sticking or is it a loose jet or something?? I"m never had much expierence with these, any info would be greatly appreciated. can"t be anything to big, the tractor ran perfect for 15 mins... thanks alot guys..

On my M I also put an inline fuel filter in just ahead of the sediment bowl under the tank. I've got metal fuel line coming part way back from the carb and then a hose the rest of the way back to the sediment bowl. I cut the hose just ahead of the sediment bowl and put in a plastic see through inline gas filter (bought at walmart) and haven't had a dirty carb problem since.

I'd follow Rusty Farmall's advice and clean the tank first, but then if anything is left the filter will catch it.

With the see through plastic filters you can see if the filter is getting dirty and replace it before it goes so dirty it won't flow.

Plus if the motor sputters and dies and you look at the see through filter and there's no gas in it you'll know you forgot to put gas in it and you are now out of gas... Learned that last week..... Oooops... Got too much in a hurry...

later,
scruffy

The others have given some good advice, but I will add that this problem will persist no matter what you do to the carb. The answer is to remove the fuel tank from the tractor and give it a complete cleaning. I can guarantee that if the tractor has been sitting for 20 years there is old fuel that has turned into gunk, you will have big chunks of rust, and who knows what else is in there. Clean it now, do it right, and you will not be bothered with it again.

THis is an easy one (unless this does not work).
Leave the gas turned off and remove the bottom of the carb. there will be a float (brass) inside that has one of two problems.
It may be filled with gasoline (not terribly likely), or the needle valve it pushes up on has some junk stuck between it and the seat. Look carefully at the assembly to get it back together correectly, then Pull the pin on the float, clean the needle valve, and shake the float to check for gas in it. Go after it!!!

Greg, Sounds like the needle valve is sticking open probably with some piece of debris under it. Might try just tapping lightly on the carb with the gas on to see if it stops. Also try draining the carb and then turn on the gas as that might clean out the needle valve, otherwise you will probably have to take the carb apart again. Others might have some other suggestions.
