Do any of you have a “magic” way to get rings unstuck without pulling up the pistons? I have an engine in a backhoe that is using a LOT of oil. I pulled the head and the guides are a bit loose, but the umbrella seals are nice and soft. The sleeves have hardly any ring ridge, the pistons are not excessively loose I can’t see past the pistons and the compression is poor. It appears to me like the rings are stuck. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :>) !

If the engine was overheated enough, you lost the temper in the rings. Now they don"t have enough tension against the cylinder wall to seal properly. Besides, if you have the head off already, you are half way there. Now just drop the pan and replace the rings and rod bearings. This is certainly not a complete overhaul but, it should help your oil consumption problem. Gene

One of the theories that I have is that it was overheated prior to my ownership but I don’t know for sure. I’m also wondering how often the oil was changed since this looks more like the inside of a diesel engine than a gas engine. Makes the other theory of stuck rings a viable one in my opinion also.

Sounds like the engine is just plain wore out.
The rings wouldn't be stuck in all cylinders,
time for an overhaul.

Shoe,

Normally I would be 100% behind you, matter of fact that was what I expected when I pulled the head. You may still indeed be right. Two things are pushing me towards trying a “quick” fix. One is the fact that it would be a LOT better for me to do overhaul this engine (it’s in my backhoe) when the ground is froze up, and second, I’m not seeing enough wear on the cylinders to merit this kind of oil consumption. My two theories are that the rings are stuck with carbon (the head is really dirty) and/or this engine was overheated before I got it and the temper was taken out of the rings causing them to seal poorly.

Hope you're right about the rings, that would be
a fix at not too much expense anyway, and wouldn't take too much time. Good luck.

Since you said the engine was overheated, I think
with the tension taken from the rings you probably
will just have to dump oil into it until this winter and then tear it down. Hal

Ok this works for me sometimes on alot of carboned 2 cycle and 4 cycle small engines.Go to the parts store and get a can of the spray type sea foam. Then while its running, get it nice and warm and spray this into the intake.Be ready for a oil fog,it helps to repel bugs and nosey neighbors. It isnt any replacement for worn rings but has worked over and over for me on the small stuff.

CaptainK:
A product that I have used to free stuck or sticky rings is Rislone Engine Oil Treatment. NAPA can get it for you (usually comes in a yellow container), just change the oil & add this stuff, then work the tractor for a few hours and I have yet to see it not fix or greatly reduce the oil usage & blue smoke. It"s a cheap ($11.00 Canadian) thing to try before getting into an engine job. Good luck!

Jeff
