Hey Guys
Could someone tell me how to convert my Cub over to 12 volt.
I know I will need to change the lights to 12v put in a 12v Battery and a alternator or generator and change the coil to a 12v is there anything else I'll need to change?
Will I need to change the points condenser out? or will it work with 12v ? I have heard something about having to add a resistor to the coil? or is this only if you keep the 6v coil? And finally could someone tell where to find a wiring diagram for a one wire alternator so I can get rid of the voltage regulator?
Thanks Bob Smith

Bob,

Three of my 13 Cubs have been converted to 12 volt. Two of them by me. The only two reasons I know of for the conversions are: 1. Some misguided previous owner has already done the conversion, and: 2. The charging system is completely missing. A 12 volt system can be installed cheaper for a missing system... especially if you already have the alternator.

If you insist on doing a conversion, I'll be happy to give you expert guidance in exchnge for your removed parts!

Wow 13 Cub's !
Now thats really something!
I just love that little tractor myself!
Hey thanks for the info and your picture is nice!
I hope to someday retire this tractor from yard duty and restore it back to it's grand ole self! but for now she needs to mow the grass every week, thats why I'm converting it to 12 volt got to stay ahead of the grass! The 6 volt system is completly shot and I have enought parts on hand to do the conversion otherwise I keep it 6 volt.
thanks for the offer of your help too! But I really do hope to convert it back one day so I'm going to hang on to the parts for now.
Thanks again

Well it is more to do with the fact that I can convert to 12 volt cheaper than I can repair the shot 6 volt system in the tractor now.
I already have a couple of alternators and good 12 volt batterys on hand and even found a NOS still in the box 12 volt coil in the barn.
I would rather keep the 6 volt system in tack but this tractor mow's the grass every week and I really need it running and reliable cause everyone knows that the grass don't stop growing cause the tractor won't run!
Normaly I am a stickler to the old adage! If it aint broke don't fix it! but in this case I got to keeper going! Thanks for the info and I will keep the old parts for later conversion back.
Thanks again Bob Smith SW-Ohio

Bob:

Yup, I guess you got the right reasoning behind it. George also is correct as he is my Cub Mentor. I am a fan of the 6 volt, but as in the case of a total rebuild or missing electrical system, then the 12 volt conversion does make a lot of sense.

George made a great offer. Take him up on it. His advice and guidance is priceless! Trust me on that.

I am glad that you will be saving the parts for a restore when the Cub is retired. Hope you enjoy that as well.

Do hope that the article above will help.

Let us know how you make out.
