Bought a rebuilt magneto, installed it, no fire. Dealer fixed it(2nd time I've returned it). Reinstalled it and now engine doesn't start that easily and when running engine runs rough(slight missing) at idle, wide open or anywhere in between. Thought it was carb, have installed two that I know for a fact are good ones from my own tractors and it run the same on all of them. Timed mag by putting #1 cyl on comp. stroke, line up the timing marks and with mag against engine I slowly turn it clockwise(looking at it from seat)until it fires. Moving timing doesn't seem to affect it. Compression is 115 lbs(new = 125). I'm really at wits end, as mag has been sent back to dealer twice and tractor will run now, but runs poorly. Tractor is ready to go to RPR next week except for this. What should I try next? Any info appreciated !!!

I went through this when I tried to put in points & condenser & clean up & grease my mag. Take off the cap & rotor, and you will see a small gear cover with two screws. When you take it off, you will see a large bronze gear, and a small steel gear. You probably have those gears meshed one tooth off. Pull the bronze gear off it"s shaft, and reposition it one tooth either way from where it is and try that. Even thought #1 is at tdc, and the timing mark is at 6:00 position, you might be firing way early or late, and the spark is jumping the gap between the rotor and the pins in the cap, causing it to run rough. In other words, the mag is firing before or after the brass strip on the rotor is exactly lined up with a pin in the cap.

It could be a magneto problem still. I Have rarly seen a rebuilt H4 that did not fire right up and run perfect as long as the fuel system is doing what it is suposed to. So maybe there is still a mag problem. I have one on ebay rigt now if you want to try another. JON

As thorough as you've been I imagine that you've changed out the spark plugs and even the wires. If nothing else, try a set from one of your other tractors. As you may know, even brand new plugs (often Champion) can refuse to fire. I would also think that the dealer would have changed out the points, rotor, cap, etc., but check on them too. Can you isolate which cylinder is missing? If so, move the spark plug to a different cylinder and see if the miss follows it. Same with wires.
Just some thoughts.

It's not one cyl., it's all of them. I'll try some more wires even though mine are new. And plugs. I'd bet it's something simple but right now I'm just really aggravated with the rebuilt mag and the problems I've had with it. I'd also like some recommendations on mag suppliers/rebuilders.

TDK, I did some reading on the H-4 and two things came up that could be causing the symptoms. Try changing the condenser- take the coil cover off and remove the retainer, remove the nut from the shut off stud, and remove the little cover on th eback of the magneto. The condenser will slide out of the hole in the back. The other thing to check is just dirty points. They can be reached by taking off the distributor cap and rotor off and removing the 3 screws that hold the distributor gear and housing in place.
Let me know what you find!
