Two-way on 31 loader.

I have 1/2" pipe screwed into the cylinder tops of a #31 loader that I got awhile ago. Not sure if I can run hose to these pipes for pressure down or not. Will these old hydraulic cylinders work as two way?

First thought that these would be for a vent, but noticed the left side has a section of pipe going almost all the way down the cylinder like somebody had it hooked up for hose. Not sure.

Buzz: Cylinders will work double action at least for a little while. The lift linkage on loader wont take it though. The intention of return lines on those old loaders was to catch any oil bypassing in cylinders and return it to resovoir.

My dad bought a new H with a 31 in 1951. Used on belly pump it had dual lines for the return oil. IH dealer later installed the loader on a new 300 for dad and set valve for single action. We changed valve one day to see what would happen. Believe me the loader lift linkage will not take it.

Hugh, reading the manual for the 31 loader I learned that the top portion of the cylinder is designed to hold extra oil, sort of a remote reservoir, because the 6 quarts in the belly pump is not enough to extend the cylinders all the way to the top.

Rusty: I realize that one as well. Saw a similar idea just lately as it applies to remote resovoir. Guy was using a 1066 with fith wheel tow dolly for moving dump trailers. He had a pto compressor for operating brakes plus a 20 gallon oil tank he plugged into opposite side of valve he was using for dumping.

Would the same apply to a JD #45 loader? I have ports on either end of the cyls and thought they were double-action. Haven't hooked it up yet but it's in the project queue.

Dave: I'm not familiar with that JD loader. However often times the double hose systems were used just to reclaim oil nothing more. Old hydraulic systems 50 years ago did a lot of bypassing, so the second hose saved oil and mess of it as well.

Thanks Hugh,

Sounds like the construction of the old 31 wasn't cut out for that sort of duty, huh?

Better off knowing about it now than latter!!!! In looking at the loader construction, it certainly is different than the "beefy" ones of today!!!

I'm going to keep her as single acting then and enjoy, rather than cutting, straightening and welding!!!

Thanks,

Buzz
