Sorry to ask such basic questions, but neither manual I have shows where and how to lubricate the tractor. Guess they figured it was something everyone knew. It is a 1946 Farmall A and I need to know where you check the transmission oil and/or the oil for the gears going down to the wheels if they are a seperate reservoir. Also, do you use GL-5 on them? Any help is appreciated.
Stan

Stan: As Vern said transmission check level plug right behind brake linkage on left side, just about at point of front of left fender. Final drives each have fill plugs on inner side near front. Usually these plugs on final drive are type to use square end of 1/2" drive. Those hole are also fill to level.

Use gear oil 90W or heavier. Book calls for 3 pt. each final drive and 4 qt. without belt pulley, 5 qt. with for transmission. Personally I use 6 qts. I have an old dipstick marked for that 6 qt. level. Been using these tractors for 45 years most of those with 6 qts. in there. It keeps transmission noise lower, and improves shifting.

Thanks! That's what I needed to know. Would assume water from the plug by the brake rod is not a good sign. Will open her up and let it drain out.
Mid July and may finally get to mow some hay today. A very frustrating summer. And, with all the extra time to kill worrying and messing with the equipment.... have found lots new to be worried about. Thanks again for all the help.

The tranny level check is on the left hand side behind the brake rod.

you can suck the lube out of the final drives with a small suction pumpcor even a large syringe with a length of hose attached.

There is no dipstick for either one and as far as I know, there is no level plug on the transmission. The final drive does not have a drain plug. You will have to remove the oil pans a replace the gaskets.
Best thing is to replace the oil with 90 wt gear oil. Transmission 1.5 gallon plus 1 pint for belt pully. One pint for each side of final drive.
