I have decided to repair the bushings and bearings on the pivot shaft in the bolster on my Super M. I have removed the wide front end and have removed the worm shaft and the castle nut on top of the steering gear. Looking at my repair and parts manual the pivot shaft looks like it should just come out the bottom. Not so. My questions are; How heavy is that pivot shaft assembly? How do I talk it into dropping out of there without ruining something by beating on it. [I am almost 50 now and am starting to use my head instead of a hammer first].

Brad You can handle the shaft ok not all the heavy. The splines on top in the gear are tappered so they will stay tight, put the nut back on so it is flush with top of shaft. Have some one hold a 2# hammer on the nut flat then get a slage hammer and give it a big blow and it should come loose. Just be clad it is tight because sometimes that is a big priblem causing the steering to shimmy.
