Was reading Ken Updike's book today and saw a picture with a Farmall 400 equipped with a Electrall.
1) What was the option color? The book shows a chrome Electrall, a photo in YT's photo gallery shows a red paint Electrall unit on a Farmall 400
2) KW output?
3) What years was it available?
4) For directly mounted to tractor Electralls, which tractor models could be ordered with the option? (The 400 and what else?)
5) How many were sold as directly mounted to tractors?
6) Factory or Dealer installed option?
7) Anyone got a tractor with one? What's your opinion?

From what I´ve got on a calender, there were only 103 units sold by IH from 1953 to 1956. Guess they could be frame mounted on Super M and 400. Trailer, fast hitch, and frame mount (dealer installed) models. They were 12.5kw at 3600 RPM.

103 units, huh? That's a small number. Also, 3600 rpm is a big number. Did the front drive have a 1:2 or some other similar step up ratio of engine speed to belt speed?

Bill a gear box was used for side mount. It bolted
on top of clutch housing and a idler gear was driven buy the same gear that drives the lower PTO
gear in a 400 ETC tractor.Idler gear drove a smaller gear that turned shaft with V belt pulley
attached to it to drive electrall.

More questions:
Why did the Electrall not succeed? 1) Were farmers scared of electricity and electric cables?
2) Did Farmall or anyone else make electric powered implements or equipment like hay bailers, harvesters, spraying equipment, feed grinders, blowers, etc?
3) Was it too expensive?
4) Did the Electrall cause accidental deaths or other safety issues?

One post from about three years ago mentioned a dairy farmer using his 400 with Electrall as back-up power for his milking operation. Sounds like a nifty idea for today's tractors!

They failed mainly because they were somewhat inefficient- especially the fram mounted units because they were powered from the inefficient belt drive gear train. The Electralls tended to be small units as well.

Tractor driven PTO generators are now quite common, especially in dairy country, and (I might be wrong)I believe some new tractors may come with 120 V outlets.

IH did make some equipment for use- there was an electric haybaler.

Guy, thanks for the info. When you say "inefficient" belt drive, what does that mean? Is the front belt drive more prone to slippage via the belt or internal energy loss due to right angle bevel gears or some other gear/internal clutch aspect? Was the Electrall belt or gear driven? If it was belt driven, it must have been a really compact belt.

It was the bevel gears from my understanding.
