i'm looking to buy a farmall super a that has been converted to 12 volt with alternator. It kinda worries me if somebody didn't do it right, would it give me problems later down the road, would the 12 volt hurt the starter? Also what would i need to put it back to 6 volt??

There's not a lot to worry about! If the alternator keeps the battery charged chances are pretty good the conversion was probably "done right" and won't give you problems. And the stock 6 volt starter will enjoy a long and healthy life on a diet of 12 volts. (My SM is fast approaching 30 years of service since I converted it to 12 volts - the original starter is still working fine).

To change back to 6 volts you need a generator and regulator (or a 6 volt alternator...) and a battery. Also possibly generator brackets, a generator belt, an ignition coil and new light bulbs.

Search this forum for Bob M.'s wiring diagrams. It is very simple to use a one wire type alternator. If it is still using the 6 volt coil, there should be a ballast resistor in the hot wire going to the coil (Borg Warner # RU4 or Echlin #ICR13). The 12 Volts will not hurt the strarter, just don't crank it for more than 30 seconds. I have a Super C and an M both on 12 volt with the original starters.

If you want to convert back to 6 volt you will need a good 6 volt generator, a 6 or 8 volt battery and at least #0 battery cables, or bigger.
