I disconnected the battery cables to change the battery and didn't pay attention to which terminal was grounded. Does it matter? If so how can I tell which is right?
thanks
Paul

It should be positive ground unless someone has messed with the system. The SA will start just great with the 6v system. Seems there isnt a day goes by without someone having a problem with changing to 12v when all they had to do was get the system they had working.

I believe all the old letter series tractors were positive ground unless someone messed with them. Connecting it backwards is bad news. The positive post however is a little larger than the neg so you probably can tell by the cable fit if it is right. I suggest changing it to 12V negative ground and put an alternator on it like we all do on these 6V clunkers.

R-cubed;

Not all of us change out 6V tractors to 12V. Just the ones that don't know how to make the 6V work.

You're right Vern.
I don't have any trouble at all with a 6 volt system on these A's & B's.

Vern: Good point, and you know half those guys that change to 12 volt don't get along any better than they did with 6 volt. Perhaps the biggest thing they did wrong with the 6 volt system, was go to auto parts store and buy a replacment battery cable too small for the job.

Most folks don't look at it this way but as far as I'm concerned there are two issues here 6 or 12 volt and either can work well. The second is charging, generator or alternator and that can be either 6 or 12 volt and again either can work well. The alternator will give better charging and is less expensive to repair.
