My son has a 1970 434. Was leveling some sand for
a play area, went to shift into 2nd and trans got
stuck in reverse. Shifting into any other gear will stall out the tractor. Kept in neutral (and
reverse) will run in reverse. Sorry, not a tractor
or transmission guy. Need some help. Thanks.....

At the base of the shifter in the transmission cover is the pin that holds the shift lever in place. You will need to knock out this pin. It has to whelsh plugs over the holes. Use a small punch, drive through the plug and knock out the pin. Use a long screw driver or pry to line up the shift rails in neutral and you're good to go. You should likely check out the shift lever while you have it out. You will likely find the end has worn thin, and that is why it came out of the rail. You can build it up with weld and grind it down smooth, or replace it with a good used one.
