How do you adjust the fan belt on a 1944 M? Putting it back together and there is a bar that runs from the motor to the generator. Problem is that when these two are connected the belt is very loose.

May be that I have the wrong size belt? It was working but who knows.

The last time I looked at an H, (just a few minutes ago) the generator belt and the water pump/fan belt were two separate belts. The tightening procedure is the same for both of them, but tightening one will have no affect on the other. The generator and the water pump both have the two piece pulley, and are adjusted in the same manner.

You have to adjust the pulley itself. Loosen the set screw lock nut on the outer pulley half & turn the set screw out (it lines up with one of several grooves on the pulley shaft). Hold the inside pulley half and rotate the outer pulley half to reduce the space between them. It will not be easy if the pulley has not been adjusted for a few years.
It may help to take the generator off the tractor and use your shop vise to hold one of the pulley halves.

Looked at this but the only adjustment is to the belt that drives the water pump not the generator.

The pulley for the generator belt is behind the one for the water pump.

Sorry....I think you're right. Only the fan belt is adjusted with the pulley. Must be that the generator belt is the wrong size, as you suggested.

I think it's like the "H". The pully that drives the belt is in two halves and by screwing the front half closer or farther from the back half, you change the tension of the belt. There is a set-screw that holds the front half, and if it hasn't been adjusted in awhile it may take some soaking to get it loose.
